Natural Born Chokers - The Proteas do it again. - Ahmed Salijee

Natural Born Chokers - The Proteas do it again.

Our cricket team has done it again. They choked and badly too. I came back from evening prayers (which end later due to Ramadaan) to switch on the radio, to hear that we needed 53 from 3 to 4 overs. I thought, well we only need about 30 from 4 overs to qualify, and this is doable. I was wrong. A whole range of stupid shots saw us knocked out. If we just looked for 1's and 2's we could have made it was not to be.

This brings up another issue - How winning can hide the weaknesses of a side. In this particular case I am referring to our top order and more specifically AB de Villiers. He is certainly a talented player but seems to fail on 4 out 5 occasions and comes great the one other time. In this series, he scored 16, 14 not out (Bangladesh),18, 1 and 1 - an average of 12.5. Now for 20-20 you might say this is ok but this guys bats at 3. Going for 16 and 18 shows that he gets in and then gives it away. The 16 was against West Indies on a terrific pitch. Not to mention the 1's. What is worse though is that other players waiting on the sidelines have to wonder what they need to do to get in. I was disappointed that Gulam Bodi, who played brilliantly locally, did not get a single chance in the series - not even in the dead game against Bangladesh.

Hopefully our rugby guys will do better!

What a disappointment.. I also really hope the rugby can make up for this.

I channel my blame to Graham Smith :) They should have played for a win from the start and ignored the 125.

Agreed, AB De Villiers is very talented but I believe he has numerous technical floors.  Kepler Wessels mentioned a couple one evening on Inside Edge.  Either he doesnt work hard enough at rectifying them, or the blame must go to the coach.  I reckon its the latter and Mickey just isn't technically adept to sort out these sorts of issues (why else would certain players battle for series after series with the same issues?!)

I dont necessarily buy this whole 'chokers' story that people seem to be getting carried away about.

Not so long ago we were locked at 2-2 against Aussie in a 1-day series.  They got 420-odd and we chased it to win the series 3-2!   Did Aussie choke, or did we just play brilliantly?   Did Aussie choke in the semis of the T20?  And does any team that doesnt actually win a tournament count as chokers?

Hi Mark,

For me choking is when you are unable to perform when it really matters or when the going gets tough - especially in the big tournaments - otherwise known as big match temperament. South Africa do have a history of this. The various World Cups are testament to this and I can even remember 2 ICC trophy championships. Quite simply I cannot remember when last our very good cricket team won a major tournament.

Hey Ahmed

I agree in a way, but I do think that people are sometimes too quick to label us chokers.

In terms of world cups, in '92 we lost because of rain, in '96 Brian Lara beat us in the quarters, in '99 Donald and Klusener choked in the semis, in '03 we lost because of a mathematical screw up by Polly in the group stages and this year we lost to the Aussies in the semis.  Not sure about the champions trophy, but I know that we've won it, and that no country has won it more than once.
