Snap Preview Anywhere

What is Snap Preview Anywhere? Snap Preview Anywhere enables anyone visiting your site to get a glimpse of what other sites you're linking to, without having to leave your site. By rolling over any link, the user gets a visual preview of the site without having to go there, thus eliminating wasted "trips" to linked sites. If you're reading this post via the web try hovering over this link to see what it's about.

Q: Why should I use Snap Preview Anywhere on my site or blog?
A: Snap Preview Anywhere makes it easier for people to know where they're going when they click on a link. Your site becomes easy to navigate. And if the link doesn't go where they want, they'll know before they leave. Besides, Snap Preview Anywhere is cool!

Saw the SnapPreview popup earlier while reading an old post on Scott Watermasysk's blog and then saw his latest post on it. It's a pretty nifty feature and very quick to implement on a blog or web site.

On Community Server just add the Snap script to your Global Settings -> Title, Description, and News -> Raw Header section to enable SnapPreview on your blog.

Update: For pages that take a while to bring up Snap images, from the Snap FAQ:

Q: How long does it take to capture the previews for links on my site or blog?
A: Images of most sites will already be in our system. If not, Snap will automatically generate a preview image while you hover over the link. Although the process is normally pretty fast, sometimes it can take more than 30 seconds, depending on how many pages are in the queue.

Alright, enough CS bigshots have bitten the bullet and installed it, so I'll give it a shot. I hope their .js file loads quickly!

It seems to load pretty quickly over here and we've got pretty lousy bandwidth :) The file is about 16k on disk.

I found that as long as there's a cached snapshot it's quite useful to have the little looking glass into the link destination on the page. If there's no cached image I don't wait for it to generate as that seems to take quite some time.

Thanks for the comment Jayson.
