Community Server Upgrade

While waiting for a connecting flight out of Washington back home I had a couple of hours spare to get some of my long outstanding TODO's for http://dotnet.org.za done:

  • Finally upgraded the site to Community Server 2007. CS2007 looks great and I've been wanting to do this for way too long.
  • Upgraded the Windows CardSpace support.
    • Instead of wasting time re-inventing the wheel I replaced the current implementation with Christian Arnold's brilliant Visual Studio 2005 Toolbox for Windows CardSpace.
    • If you need to add support for Information Cards to your ASP.NET site you don't need to look any further than that. (For Community Server specific instructions see here)
    • The integration is possibly without any code changes and uses the default Community Server membership provider.
    • These type of controls should really ship with ASP.NET vNext as it really lowers the barrier for securing your site with CardSpace significantly and will speed up CardSpace adoption.
    • Unfortunately if you already had an Infocard assigned to your account at dotnet.org.za you'll have to browse to the Change Password page and reassign your Infocard again.
  • Implemented CAPTCHA support site wide

There's a couple of other TODOs left like the careers page that broke after the upgrade which I'll hopefully get fixed tomorrow when I'm back home.

If you've got a blog on dotnet.org.za I would recommend you take a look at the new theming model in CS 2007 which really makes it a lot easier to design and modify your own blog themes without having to deploy anything. Also see the Community Server 2007 Theming Extravaganza for a chance to win some killer prizes.
