Sharepoint Help Needed - *Hides under Desk*

K, i have a “Customers” table is SQL that i want to use for list metadata, so that when someone say, uploads a documents, they can tag that document with a customer from that table. Now, i know when you add a column you can choose information from lists on the site, and i know that with lists, you can link to an access database, and i know that with an access database you can have linked servers with SQL, but trust me, going this route didnt work.

Am i being blonde ? is there another way to do this out-of-the-box with no development ?
