Syntergy has an Audit product for Sharepoint that tracks activity on documents and other list types. They log it to a database and provide a simple query interface.

Software cost money, I think around $7,500 for a company. We have it in our company and it works great.

I have done some custom parsing of the usage analyis log file - you can get the aggregations through the object model, but the log files give you the raw info to manage - things like who accessed pages and documents when and from where. Very useful on audit tracking and rolling additional information together. It sounds like Syntergy is probably using the same mechanism, and putting together a more usable solution than custom coding it.

The only problem is that its too costly for a small company.

We checked 2 commercial solutions for getting Sharepoint doc statistics and audit trail - Syntergy and CardioLog (from a company called Intlock) - both of them were very good but CardioLog was far more sophisticated though much more expensive. These guys are experts in Sharepoint analytics and give statistics on every move taking place in the portal with a beautiful presentation layer.
