Closed-Source

For lack of a better Title.....
Just an idea. Wouldnt it be great if say 10 developers from around South Africa came together to build something that makes them money ?
They would effectively be equal shareholders in each project. Why should the companies we work for make so much money off us ?
The more developers you get per project, the less after hours work you would have to put in, but i guess, the smaller your share of profits are.

K, so....
Who would be interested in such initiatives ? Would such initiatives work ?

There's certainly a lack of entrepreneurial spirit among SA devs these days (or maybe they just don't publicize themselves enough). Checkout www.microisv.com, it's a great blog on topics such as this.

I'm fully behind you on this one. I think 'closed source' is being overshadowed too much by open source. We need a balance.

Hay, ill be behind open source, when coke open up their recipe, when KFC open up the colonel secret recipe, when all car manufacturers come together to build THE car, and finally, but most importantly, when the ppl i give software too pay for my house, car, and childrens futures.

enough of that.

So, who would be interested in starting some ventures ? We could get a team of people together, and start brainstorming ideas and get the ball rolling. The world is our oyster.

I'm trying to get something like this off the ground with a project I picked up. The problem is that you still need the registered company with a front etc to the customer. No customer will ever be happy with just a group of developers freelancing. They need some kind of guarantee that the work will be done, that the product will be supported afterward etc. I'm currently taking that responsibility and for doing that expect to make a little more profit than the rest of the guys. But I have to pay for the overheads fo providing the customer front, so see it as fair practice.

How do you see the payment structure for the development work working. Would you contribute your time & code, and only get royalties, or would you prefer getting paid per module you deliver, and no royalties, or a bit of both?

i was thinking, initially, to develop ecom sites or subscriptions sites whereby the developers get an equal share of profits, or profit stucture to be decided on startup.
