What is Architecture ? - Arno Nel 2.0

What is Architecture ?

What do you think about these statements:

  • Architecture is 50% business, 50% Tech.
  • The Architect doesnt decide wether or not to use DataGrids.
  • The Architect doesnt care about coding standards
  • The Architect doesnt care about reading UML
  • The Architect doesnt care about Agile/RUP/MSF etc
  • The Architect translates IT to Business
  • "Microsoft believes that traveling the “arc of possibility” is the foundation of everything done by creative developers, IT professionals, and business people with a mission. Architecture transcends the individual and creates a community of ideas with a shared language of design. Architecture crosses the boundaries of systems to unite the components of business."

What do YOU think Architecture is, cause i certainly dont know.

For me, (software) architecture is the process of designing a solution (software) which solves a problem :)

But, I agree with most of your statements :)

Personally I think it's silly to even think architects wouldn't care about standards.  If anything they should be more aware and understand the long-term advantages of strict processes and standards based design.

Let's be realistic - Developers have not historically been the most "creative" bunch. Just like creative people have not always been the most logical.

Success is a collaborative effort far beyond the scope of a single person, or team

I visualise architecture as a "running machine" as a whole. Each piece contributing to a successful end-result.

That's my opinion :)

My idea of an Architect is exactly the same as that of a Housing Architect, plan everything to the T and then hand over to the developers and say "here, do you or don't you agree and why?"

Unfotunately in our country we do not have the luxury of such architects.
