Microsoft
Why do you think Microsoft is so successful?
Great Solutions and great partners
What product/s coming out of Microsoft excites you the most and why?
This would rule out the 2007 Office System because it is already available, so I would say the Office Communications Server 2007 – the value that this brings is amazing
There was Apple, Netscape and now Google. Who do you think are Microsoft's top competitors and why?
I believe that IBM will be our top competitor for a little while: The breadth of areas where they compete against Microsoft – desktop suites, messaging and collaboration, portals and infrastructure.
If you could make 1 acquisition on Microsoft’s behalf, which company would it be and why?
www.secondlife.com – They have a unique gaming offering and scope for moving outside of gaming.
Office and SharePoint
Ballmer once quoted the Office/Vista/Exchange product launch as “a new era for business computing” What's the big deal?
I will be writing a blog on this soon. Simply, it is about the New World of Work – how business trends have changed which in turn has changed how people need to work. My blog will be a little more detailed so watch out for that.
What are “Information Workers”?
These are people within an organization that are mostly task orientated and rely on the PC to get their jobs done. They are probably the most advanced users of software in organizations.
What does it mean to be “People Ready”?
A People Ready Business is an organization that realizes that people are their most important asset and empower them with the right technology solutions so that they can o their best work.
What do you think it is that makes SharePoint so attractive to organizations?
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 provides an integrated platform to deliver services across Collaboration, Portals, Enterprise Search, Enterprise Content Management, Business Process and Forms, Business Intelligence. There is no other software and solution provider that offer this breadth of offering with equivalent level of out of the box fit for the customer. Many local and global companies have already deployed or chosen to deploy Office SharePoint Server 2007 in the 3 months since its availability
How do you expect collaboration technologies to evolve?
They will become even more integrated and they will become an integral part of every successful business.
How do you use SharePoint day to day?
All of Microsoft’s Intranet is built on SharePoint – so almost everything including. To share documents, to search for information and to get updates on blogs
What is your favorite feature and why?
Ability to drive an ad-hoc workflow process from with 2007 Office Suite
What does the future hold for SharePoint?
SharePoint will continue to be the core of Microsoft’s Office System. It is essentially the “Windows” of the Office System. Almost every solution or scenario runs within a Office SharePoint 2007 environment. Other Microsoft solution areas will also use it as the platform of choice including Dynamics and BI
SaaS
What is your opinion of online office products like those of Google, and do you think it will influence Microsoft’s Roadmap?
Our approach in this space has been around for some time. At Microsoft, we believe that it is not an either/or scenario. Either Rich Client applications or web applications. Our Microsoft Live strategy combines Live Services with the Rich applications on the desktop and servers. Online office suites certainly have a place in the market and this has been under consideration for some time. However, based on customer feedback there are no current plans. Applicability in South Africa is questionable considering our broadband penetration and cost.
What is your opinion of SaaS, and do you get a feeling public-sector clients are interested in SaaS?
I believe that PS customer are engaged in these discussions. Particularly around offering SaaS to their residents.
Do you think SharePoint will go the SaaS route?
Yes. It already has done. We have a number of partners that offer SharePoint as a Hosted Application. In addition, Office Live is based on SharePoint.
Looking forward a year, two years, three years, how will business software be different?
Users will get much more from their Office Suite and drive their business from within their Office Suite – completely integrated into other Line of Business Systems. Giving people the comfort of a familiar and powerful Interface.
Fun
