White Rabbit
“When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go”

- From Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit.

Somebody on the Usenet posted a very concise personality test to determine roughly which part of an organization one is suited to, the head, or leadership, or the body, the followers. It consists of one question, “Do you prefer following policy, or do you prefer improving policy?”

Somebody that formulates improvements will not be a good follower. I have no pretensions of taking over the leadership of our company, and this is probably the last time I will use the word “our” in the same sentence as my employer, who recently described the developers, for thinking freely and criticising management, as “pawns trying to play king and queen.” On a previous occasion we were referred to a “work-horses”.

I like to think that I form part of the company I work for, and that we as a collective work for the good of the company, rather than being a mindless game piece to be shunted around at every whim of a dictatorial management. Sadly any illusions of being a contributor here have been shattered.
Speed!

I got a lift to work this morning in an Audi S4.  I shouldn't have to say more, but I have to.  I don't think I have ever felt a car pull like that, never mind the insanely high speed cornering that it handles like a dream.  We are talking 4.2l V8 power here, but so refined.

I've never been a light flashing lane-hopper fan, but now I understand.
