Nickelback concert
It was scheduled for November 2006 and then postponed to 2007 due to the band being worn out. I noticed a news article on the Mr Price site a while back listing the new concert dates for March 2007. After e-mails to and from Computicket and the promoters apparently the news article was incorrect. The concert details are going to be announced in about two weeks time and it looks like Nickelback will be gracing us with their presence in May 2007. Finally! Finally real broadband, 2Mbps+ here I come
Recently the incumbant fixed line telecoms operator in South Africa (Telkom) decided to upgrade all consumer 1Mbps ADSL lines to a potential 4Mbps service for a trial of video on demand. As soon as I heard of this free upgrade for the beta I decided to upgrade my measly home 512Kbps service to 1Mbps. After a few days of nothing happening I magically noticed a 200KB/sec download of the .NET Framework 3.0 RC1 from Microsoft. Its amazing how a little bit of a speed boost can make such a difference to...
Why I hate Linux... sometimes
When I'm not busy with my regular activities at work I often am fiddling in Linux. My preference is the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and I must say the Linux kernel has given me some grey hairs lately. I decided to upgrade from kernel 2.6.8-16 to the most recent stable kernel 2.6.17-7. A wonderful idea. Lots of new drivers, many bug-fixes and a whole lot more. All I really wanted was connection marking support so that my Shorewall firewall could handle multiple connections to the Internet correctly...

Congratulations to SA Developer members Pieter Germishuys (DirectX) and to Hilton Giesenow and Armand Du Plessis (C#) for receiving the Microsoft MVP award. This adds another 3 MVPs to the list for South Africa. Oh and thanks to Ruari for letting us all know. :) Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!
VMware Introduces Free VMware Server
I must say I didn't expect VMware to pull a Microsoft and make their server product free. Source: http://www.vmware.com/news/releases/server_beta.html Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

jsTrace rocks
I happened to stumble upon a really cool utility called jsTrace to assist with debugging JavaScript today. No more do I need to play with alert() or window.status anymore. http://www.easy-designs.net/code/jsTrace/ Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!
Attack of the clippers
So I wonder how many SA Developer members took up the challenge to shave their heads for the CANSA Shavathon 2005 ? Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!
Is there a bug in the ORDER BY clause of SQL Server 2000?
I think I've stumbled across a bug in SQL Server 2000 SP4 when it comes to sorting a query result based on a field that is not in the select list. To demonstrate, create two tables named Foo and Bar in a database and insert some data in them. CREATE TABLE [ dbo ].[ Foo ] ( [ Id ] INTEGER NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY , [ Description ] NVARCHAR ( 256 ) NOT NULL ) CREATE TABLE [ dbo ].[ Bar ] ( [ Id ] INTEGER NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY CONSTRAINT [ FK_Bar__Foo ] FOREIGN KEY REFERENCES [ dbo ].[ Foo ] ([ Id ]), [...
And the 11th commandment is... Must run on Linux
No I'm not making a biblical reference here, I'm referring to The Open Source Definition which is commented on by Shaun Walker in his interesting article about Windows, Open Source software and how the industry zealots believe Open Source can't be built upon non-Open Source platforms. Unix vs Windows
Steve Rowe makes a few interesting points regarding the age-old argument of is Unix better than Windows in his post titled Unix vs Windows . "I have come to the conclusion that most "Windows is better" or "Unix is better" arguments at the wholistic level come down to familiarity. I have had discussions with a friend who is a BSD guy. Most of his criticisms are outdated or just plain wrong." Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!
