Telkom in the dwang for claims
It looks like Telkom is in a bit of a pickle over its recent " Do Broadband " advertising. A post on MyBroadband details the complaint from a consumer that says its false advertising. Mr Moorad lodged a consumer complaint against Telkom’s “do” broadband campaign, arguing that the advertisements claims of being suitable for ‘movies, gaming and music’ is misleading. According to the ASA website, the complainant submitted that the advertising states that one can “do” music, movies and on-line...
MadLove wins Xbox Soundtracks competition for South Africa
In a previous post I originally announced that two South African bands were in the top rated tracks list in the Xbox Soundtracks competition run by Microsoft and Universal Music. Today it was announced in a press release that the local Johannesburg based band MadLove had been crowned as the South Africa winner for the Xbox Soundtracks competition. MadLove’s Angel’s Fall track for Tomb Raider was ranked as the best track by visitors to the contest site. For the past month thousands of musicians and...
The death of Home Theatre PCs in South Africa
I was saddened to open my feed reader this morning. A local developer and Windows Media Center enthusiast, Colin Savage, who was the man behind the ZaEpg service has been legally forced to cease and desist by the South African television monopoly known as MultiChoice. Yes everyone that is running a HTPC (Home Theatre PC) like Windows Media Center will soon have no more DStv Electronic Program Guide (EPG). It would be great if MultiChoice actually offered their guide information electronically other...
Nickelback to tour end of the year
Its been a few months since I blogged about the Nickelback tour to South Africa. The organizer, Kusasa , never did get around to a press release and the concert wasn't rescheduled for early in 2007 as was claimed last year. So I finally got on the phone to the organizers them and apparently the band is going to be gracing fans with their presence either at the end of November or the first week of December 2007. A year after their planned tour dates is an awfully long time to keep fans waiting...
Is MultiChoice afraid of IPTV?
This morning I attended the First Tuesday breakfast session on IPTV . Rishaal from Accenture presented a global view of IPTV and whatnot and it was really boring. Next up was Jonathan Newman, head of strategy at MultiChoice. He effectively left the audience believing that IPTV would not be possible in South Africa until Telkom reduced the cost of broadband bandwidth as the current practice of Internet usage capping would lead to prohibitive costs for the consumer. However he failed to clarify to...
Reminder - The Open Innovation Dinner
Just a quick reminder about the Open Innovation Dinner that is taking place tonight in Johannesburg at Primi Piatti Studio in Rosebank. According to the site it there are still seats available so there is still time to book a seat for the talks on innovation by Prof. Eddie Obeng and Jon Foster-Pedley . South African tracks for the world on Xbox Soundtracks
Microsoft EMEA is running a worldwide competition to discover the next-generation of music-makers through an initiative called Xbox Soundtracks . The competition has reached the voting stage and the community is called to action to vote on the submissions. The winner of the competition will get the chance to record their soundtrack professionally with the Universal Music team. Looking at the top rated tracks list reveals two South African bands, Gently Scar'd and MadLove, in the top 3. Wow! Currently...
BT Games time trial expanded
BT Games just announced that the Forza Motorsport 2 time trial tournament that was announced yesterday for their Northgate store has been changed due to an overwhelming response from the community. The tournament has been expanded to include 9 of 10 of their stores. The only store not participating will be the Rustenburg store. Check out the updated invitation here . Forza Motorsport 2 launched in South Africa
On Friday the 1st of June 2007, Microsoft South Africa invited a group of media, retailers and community members to the Kyalami Race Track for the launch of Forza Motorsport 2, the sequel to Microsoft Game Studios' award-winning, fully-customisable driving simulator Forza Motorsport. The day started off with a hearty breakfast and an introduction by Cindy White to the new Country Lead for Xbox 360 in South Africa, Marc Batten. John Press, the product manager for Xbox 360, highlighted the main...
Anyone going Zoopy?
Zoopy they said, I was wondering if they were going a bit loopy in the head but apparently South Africa has its very own YouTube meets Flickr site and its called Zoopy . Its run by a local company called Full House Technologies whose goal it is to make the world a smaller place that's far more fun to live in . The site is pretty straight forward to use and there is even a Java-based Zoopy Mobile client for your mobile phone so you can upload those random pictures easily while out in the field...
Xbox LIVE definitely coming to South Africa
One result of all the commotion around the Xbox 360 Dashboard update and the new content control was an urgent push to get the draft of an online petition to Microsoft South Africa requesting clarity on Xbox LIVE in South Africa out the door earlier. And I must say that it is a great effort. The South African gaming community is getting behind the online petition which I encourage every South African Xbox supporter to sign. So far there are almost 500 signatures and more being added daily. There...
Xbox LIVE content control explained for South Africans
Over the last couple of days the local Xbox 360 community has been a bit agitated regarding the Dashboard software update that has gone live today. The update adds a whole bunch of cool new features like integration with the Windows Live Messenger (or MSN Messenger for those behind the times) network so you can now chat with your buddies from your console as well. Last week the Microsoft Games Global Marketing team blogged about the new Xbox 360 Marketplace territory controls being strengthened....
New Xbox LIVE content control and South African gamers
The Microsoft Community Manager for Xbox.com known as AceyBongos has made an interesting post today regarding the new content controls put in place for Xbox Live Marketplace. Currently South Africa doesn't have official access to the Xbox LIVE service as it hasn't been launched yet locally so a lot of us signed up for access through the UK or US services. Its a common practice and it works well as we get access to the amazing Xbox LIVE network and the unlimited gaming and social networking...
