So Apple has finally decided to put the Mac OS X built-in browser Safari out on the Windows platform as well. You can read all about it here and Sean Hederman has an interesting viewpoint on it here as well. Personally I encourage competition and I welcome anyone who believes they can compete to come forward and do so. So far I've successfully installed and run it at home last night (Windows Vista x64) and at work (Windows XP SP2). No problems so far and it seems to be fast and friendly. Is it...
According to the Windows Vista team blog post over here there are some new betas available. The most important for me is the Windows Live Writer Beta 2 which now features the ability to add categories and a special new paste method. As my tool of preference I can't wait to try it out. Windows Live Messenger 8.5 adds a new look and feel thats more suitable for Windows Vista and the Windows Live Mail is the successor to Windows Mail on Windows Vista and Outlook Express on Windows XP. I've been...
Yesterday the much awaited SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 was released to the web. Significant changes include: the ability to run maintenance plans without SQL Server 2005 Integration Services (SSIS) installed performance improvements to the plan cache to make more effective use of physical memory reversal of the SP1 change to SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (SSRS) where multivalue report parameters lost the Select All option Windows Vista support Note that the links for the express edition don...
I'm a fan of Windows Vista already just from my experience with the release candidates. The product is stable and well finished and it makes me smile to read an article like this from Jim Allchin detailing the smarts of Windows Vista power management improvements. I like the idea of preparing for hibernation on a desktop PC and then entering sleep mode. No more Eskom power failure problems for me - unless it happens during the middle of the day. I wonder what happens when a managed UPS is connected...
Windows PowerShell 1.0 (known previously as project Monad) has been released to the web today. Well thats the claim from this blog entry at least. Its just a pity that when you goto the download page you get presented with downloads for Windows PowerShell RC2 and unfortunately most links don't work. Maybe when it is actually released we can all start getting ourselves up to speed on the powerful new shell concepts instead of those clunky old batch files that we've been using up until now...
Well its official , the long awaited next generation operating system Windows Vista has broken out of development and testing and has gone gold. Yes its hit the release to manufacturing (RTM) milestone and is scheduled to appear in retail stores worldwide on the 30th of January 2007 alongside Microsoft Office System 2007. Watch this video and hear Jim Allchin announcing the release. I must say that I am really impressed with the platform quality. I've been testing RC1 x64 for a few weeks now and...
My mission this evening was to get Virtual Server 2005 R2 x64 to install on Windows Vista RC1 x64 build 5600. Lets just say that I hoped for the best and just ran the setup. After the installation completed with no errors I tried to update to Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta 2 which adds support for hardware-based virtualisation on my Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The installation succeeded but Virtual Server 2005's Administration site wouldn't load. Thanks to this blog entry by Grant Holiday, I managed...
