I have been actively and religiously following the StackOverflow initiative started earlier this year by Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood . I have been listening to every podcast, finding the content of their discussions informative and interesting, often bringing some reality and realism to the world of development and IT. Jeff e-mailed me a link to the beta about 2 weeks ago, however due to my own personal commitments with Tech-Ed South Africa I was not able to spend a lot of time on the site. I have...
Since I received my MacBook in December I have been taking the time to use it as often as I can. As with all new things the novelty of owning one wore off after about a 2 weeks, however the usefulness of the MacBook never stopped. My progression to the Mac has been slow however for the last 2 weeks I have been using it as my primary machine, and it has proven its weight in gold during this time. I initially only used my MacBook for e-mail and web browsing. Taking the time to get to know Leopard ...
Two new MVP's join the list of current South African MVP's. This list seems to be growing quarter after quarter and I hope to see many more IT professionals, especially Developers get involved in the community. Well done to the new MVP's: Zlatan Dzinic (Sharepoint) Bruce Nicholson (Dynamics CRM) Also congratulations to the renewed MVP's for this quarter: Pieter Germishuys (XNA/DirectX) Hilton Giesenow (Visual C#) Nicholas Blank (Exchange) Keep up the hard work and looking forward...
On the 3rd floor of the Musgrave Center, a group of individuals got together to plan a new and exciting sequence of events. The first of these involves me joining the dynamic team of IT Intellect lecturer from May, in my new role as Development lecturer. I have been passionate about training for some time, having worked closely with SA Developer.Net and the DuT while running student workshops, and am very excited to start exploring a new avenue within my career. The second event is the rebirth of...
From this year I will be using my main blog at www.diago.co.za for all my up to date information. I am still fully supportive of DotNet.org and all the work Armand and his team is doing and will be contributing a lot more to the Tutorial Centre blog started last year. Feel free to pop on over and add me to your RSS Feeds to keep up to date with the happenings in my world, and the world of technology. I've been a software developer now for almost 8 years. Before then use to play around with code, but my core focus used to be sales and software/hardware support. I have always learnt as I go, never really considering the real impact of what I do. I am not sure if it has to do with me growing older, or just me becoming more aware of how much I enjoyed what I am doing, but around a year ago I decided it is time I started giving back to the community. I got more actively involved where I can, particularly...
Another dismal delivery failure by Speed Services On Thursday, 7 June 2007, my mom handed my newly acquired HTC P4350 in at the Florida Post Office to be sent to the Musgrave Post Office using Speed Services overnight delivery. She was not informed about getting insurance on the phone, and as she was not aware of the option being available never asked. The phone was packaged and scanned for collection. She was informed that the phone will be placed on the 14:30 flight from JHB and will be available...
A List Apart has posted a brilliant article here about educating stakeholders regarding Web Technology. I think it's a must read for any Web Developer working with clients, as often they have very limited technical knowledge. ALA remains one of my favorite sites with some brilliant articles and design tips, as well as an awesome collection of CSS tutorials. Michelle owns a company called Eskhaleni Technologies , who are registered Microsoft Partners . Because of this she qualified for a Action Pack Subscription , and we both have been on an extensive drive to sort out all our software licenses. We ordered the subscription at the end of March and it earlier this week. I was suitably impressed with the range of software that the subscription comes with for a meager R 2508.00 per annum license fee. A complete breakdown of the applications and licenses...
The first exciting bit of Development news I have is that Telligent, the makers of Community Server, has released the next generations of their server software called Community Server 2007. The new version sports a new skinning mechanism called Chameleon, improved performance, new forum and blogging features as well as the normal bells and whistles associated with new ASP.Net applications. They have also brought out new licensing options, including an Express Edition with restricted features however...
We live in an era of information overload. I previously blogged about how easy it is to get information online, however I have come up with another interesting question. How valid is the information we read and find online ? After 12+ years online I have a system that I follow when I rate information I find online. I use this analyse and determine the accuracy of the information that I find especially when troubleshooting or looking for advise. Does the information make logical/technical sense ? This...
Microsoft has launched a Beginner's Developer Learning centre aimed at the beginner programmers with information on how to start your first Web or Windows application in .Net using any of the Express Editions. Not to sure if this is a good or bad thing for hard core developers out there and an industry already overrun by junior developers, however it's a brilliant idea from Microsoft. More about this site here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/beginner/ Share this post: email it! | bookmark...
Information at your fingertips. Not more then 10 years ago if I needed an answer to a problem I had to visit the local library and look through encyclopedia's and reference books or find someone with experience to answer the question. When you started an application on your computer and it came up with an error message, you prayed that someone out there has had a similar experience, or that some manual or reference book has got it well documented. Today it's simple. Open up Google. Type in the error...
