From a community aspect this year's Tech-Ed proved to be an awesome event. I had the privilege of planning and hosting the community lounge this year, and it would not have been half as successful without the support and the help from an awesome team of community members, MVP's and Microsoft staff. I would like to thank various people for their involvement in the lounge. Du Preez Kritzinger for managing and planning the community lounge, and allowing me complete freedom with the stand. Amory...

From 3 August 2008, Durban will be abuzz with Microsoft. With Tech-Ed coming to the ICC there will be a huge crowd assembling every day to come and hear what Microsoft has in store for the next few months, with almost 200 more sessions then before. Behind the scenes a lot of work has gone into making Tech-Ed 2008 one of the best yet. Microsoft is focussing a lot of attention on communities this year, and community lounge promises to be bigger and better then ever. With more floor space then before...

I arrived in JHB yesterday morning at 7:45. I was strangely not surprised at the roadblock outside the airport and the traffic running from the Airport to the ITI offices, but did however realise I don't miss a moment of it. Effectively I walk to work, as my office is 2 blocks down from my house. I had a few rushed but very productive meetings with Microsoft as well as internal ITI meetings that will be continuing today, addressing various issues. One of the people on my meeting list was Ruari...

On the 3rd floor of the Musgrave Center, a group of individuals got together to plan a new and exciting sequence of events. The first of these involves me joining the dynamic team of IT Intellect lecturer from May, in my new role as Development lecturer. I have been passionate about training for some time, having worked closely with SA Developer.Net and the DuT while running student workshops, and am very excited to start exploring a new avenue within my career. The second event is the rebirth of...

Bytes Systems Integration sponsored me to go to Tech-Ed 2007 . The planning for this started in August already and on Sunday morning shortly after 10:00am Craig and I was all set to head to Sun City . The GPS on Craig's Nokia N95 made easy work of directing us to the venue and we arrived shortly after 12:00pm, after a stop for refreshments and fuel. Registration was fairly painless and we received very nice shoulder bags filled with some magazines and the normal notebook, pen and event guides...

I've been a software developer now for almost 8 years. Before then use to play around with code, but my core focus used to be sales and software/hardware support. I have always learnt as I go, never really considering the real impact of what I do. I am not sure if it has to do with me growing older, or just me becoming more aware of how much I enjoyed what I am doing, but around a year ago I decided it is time I started giving back to the community. I got more actively involved where I can, particularly...

SA Developer has recently run a few events in JHB and the Western Cape around LINQ. Unfortunately the KZN audience is not ready for a talk on LINQ, however personally I am extremely interested in it. I found a set of brilliant articles on DotNetSlackers explaining LINQ in detail. It's currently in 3 parts and the first starts here . The first exciting bit of Development news I have is that Telligent, the makers of Community Server, has released the next generations of their server software called Community Server 2007. The new version sports a new skinning mechanism called Chameleon, improved performance, new forum and blogging features as well as the normal bells and whistles associated with new ASP.Net applications. They have also brought out new licensing options, including an Express Edition with restricted features however...
I went through my project list this morning and realised how many different projects I am involved in, and more importantly how wide the scope of these projects are. It is very rare for me to not be involved in multi projects at the same time, and this month is no different. Asset Management System (AMS) The AMS system I mentioned before. It is a 3-Tier application which allows companies to use PDT barcode scanners and RF Tags to keep track of all the company assets. The current architecture of this...
