Erich Gamma interview
Everyone probably already knows this, but artima.com had an interview with Erich Gamma and posted 5 articles on their website. I read the interview and it is really good. Never has so much sense been talked in such a small amount of pages :). Here are the links in case you missed them: 1. How to Use Design Patterns 2. Erich Gamma on Flexibility and Reuse 3. Design Principles from Design Patterns 4. Patterns and Practice 5. Eclipse's Culture of Shipping Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! |...

What do you think about this "genuine windows" thing ?
Trying to download mdac 2.8 today, I was confronted by the “geniune windows” thing. I'd heard about it, but this was the first I saw of it. My first comment is “how can a windows installation not be “genuine” ? Windows is windows, wether you paid for it or not. So I recon it's just marketing speak for “legal windows”. Apart from that, my gut feel says that restricting updates etc. to owners of legal windows software is not a good thing. Of course at the moment...

Bye Dalene
Dis nogal sad dat Dalene Matthee dood is. Dit voel nie regtig of daar klomp skrywers is wat haar plek kan vat nie. Ten minste sal ons altyd weer Fiela se kind, en Kringe in 'n bos kan lees...... News24 berig Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Get fired for blogging
Check out this article on people that got fired for bad-mouthing their companies on their blogs. The bad thing is that they did not even mention the company name or any detail whatsoever! They basically just said “my job sucks” on their blogs and because someone from the company was reading the blog...... the people got fired. That really sucks! Jabber, Psi and MSN
I struggled to get MSN working for behind the firewall I have to face these days. Then I came across Jabber. Jabber is a open messaging platform which can be used by applications but is great for instant messaging. There's a whole network of servers worldwide that support Jabber. There are several jabber clients that can connect you to the network. The one I use is called Psi . What makes this a nice option is that it allows you to connect to the internet via SSL, so you avoid all those funny ports...

Old games, Abandonia and dosbox
We've had many conversations at work where we fondly remembered the games we played when we still in school. I've been aware of “abandonwares” (games so old that companies don't mind you not paying for them) for a long time, but I recently found a very good, no nonsense site for downloading these - Abandonia . The problem with most of these is that they struggle to run on “modern” pc's. Dosbox to the rescue. This cool tool emulates old fashioned DOS an can even get your old...

Interesting way to convert a char to a short
One wonders how some people manage to get a job with code like this ushort GetAsciiValue (uchar ch) { ushort i; for (i=0; i<=255; i++) { if(ch == i) return i; } return 0; } [ From the WTF ] Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

SphereXP
I've seen a demo of project looking glass, a 3D desktop environment for Linux\Unix and it was pretty good, now there's a Windows XP version. It still needs a lot of work, but it's not that bad. Pick up the story or Rory Blyth's blog . Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!
