Broken Window Theory
by
hannes
In inner cities, some buildings are beautiful and clean, while others are rotting hulks. Why? Researchers in the field of crime and urban decay discovered a fascinating trigger mechanism, one that very quickly turns a clean, intact, inhabited building into a smashed and abandoned derelict. One broken window, left unrepaired for any substantial length of time, instills in the inhabitants of the building a sense of abandonment—a sense that the powers that be don't care about the building...

Downtime is not funny
by
hannes
Sometimes it amazes’ me how poor South African customer service really are. On Tuesday I went to the VodaShop in my office building to renew my cell phone contract. The saleslady said “sorry sir, we have a problem with our ‘system’, it’s offline at the moment but give leave my number and she’ll phone me as soon as it comes back on line later”. No problem I said, I can wait, I can also understand that systems are sometimes down. Well on Wednesday the ‘system’...

Why SA rugby will never be a force like a decade back
by
hannes
As I was sitting this morning at the breakfast table, reading the morning news paper I realize why South African rugby will never be a force like a decade back. I was reading an article about the Bulls third choice hooker that wants to go to the Cheetahs. The Bulls say no and now the parties want to go to court. It is ridicules that a rich province can just contract left, right and center players without ever using them. So many talented players are taken out of the game because of selfish rugby...

Economy 101
by
hannes
Over the past couple of months the South African economy are really in overdrive, or should I rather say we are spending like hell. My theory for this is really very simple. Due to our rather high property values fewer people are able to effort there own housing, this is especially true in lower income and first time buyers markets. So the alternative is to go and rent which is currently a very affordable option. This leave people with extra money in there pockets which are spend on luxuries instead...

An Incremental Process for the whole SDLC
by
hannes
Working for the first time in big team I come to realize more and more the importance of effective communication. During my interview I was asked what my understanding was of an incremental process was and I responded with the typical textbook answer. After working for a couple of weeks I realized applying an incremental process across the whole of the SDLC is not so easy. Our analyst phase was drifting away from our development phase. This caused frequent rework, people where becoming frustrated...
