The big time Came across Founders at work via Joel on Software blog-post . Interesting and inspiring reading if you want to know how these guys in IT made it big. Test yourself If you are a Microsoft developer test your skills here . I did not score to well. Adventure One of my dreams is to travel across the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. To do it you would need some serious transportation. If you only want a 4 x 4 for an adventure check out Britz Africa for rentals. Hobby Now this is cool . I got...

Rags to riches

The Kaizer Chiefs manager flies to Baghdad to watch a young Iraqi play football and is suitably impressed and arranges him to come over to South Africa . Two weeks later Kaizer Chiefs are 4-0 down to Supersport with only 20 minutes left. The manager gives the young Iraqi striker the nod and on he goes. The lad is a sensation - scores 5 goals in 20 minutes and wins the game for Kaizer Chiefs! The fans are delighted, the players and coaches are delighted and the media love the new star. When the player...

Flat tyres and TV
by

Last weekend I went to visit a friend on holiday at Wortelgat near Stanford . We had a lovely time spending the day on the lagoon and enjoying the company of friends. On the way back we had a flat wheel which is not crisis unless your car’s boot did not want to open. Well with some effort we got the wheel out through the Polo’s back seat. McCarthy VW, Parow, fixed the boot for us. Apart from the fact the boot still does not want to open with key the service that we received was pretty good for South...

Lately a lot of my blog posts were about things that are wrong in South Africa. I don’t want to become another moaning South African and politicize what happing here. Unfortunately it’s difficult not speak about things that affect me. We kept quite to long. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Standing together
by

According to an article the newspaper, Die Burger , the SAIRR (South African Institute for Race Relationships) are keeping an eye on the song De La Ray. The reason is that it sets an example of the search for a leader and identity among young Afrikaners. So what? I ask myself. It all right for ANC and PAC youth to sing songs about killing the Boers but nothing gets ever said or done about it. So why is it a problem that the Afrikaner is searching for leadership, are some one afraid what might happen...

De La Rey
by
hannes
On a mountain in the night I lie in the dark and wait In the mud and the blood As cold rain clings to my pack And my house and my farm were burnt to the ground so they could capture our land But the flame and the fire that once burned now burn profundly within my heart. De La Rey, De La Rey come lead the Boer De La Rey, De La Rey General, General united with you we shall rise or we fall. General De La Rey. Against the soldiers that laugh A handful of us against an army of them With the cliffs of...

Crime on my doorstep
by
hannes
In a resent interview South African president, Thabo Mbeki said that he does not think crime is such a big problem in South Africa. Well I can understand why he thinks that, if I have a small army of body guards surrounding me everywhere I go I would also think crime does not exist. I considered myself a lucky South African, living in Cape Town, statically the murder capital of South Africa I’ve been little affected by crime so far. The only notice I take of crime is what I see on TV. and read in...

OO Design Axioms
by
hannes
In his book, Object Oriented Systems Development using the UML language, Ali Bahrami has the following to say about axioms and corollaries. Axioms By definition, an axiom is a fundamental truth that is always observed to be valid and for which there are no counter exception s . T wo of the most important Object Oriented Design Axiom s are The Independence axiom The Information axiom The Independence axiom deals with the relationships between components. One component should be able to satisfy the...

Patterns
by

Characteristic of a good pattern [1] It solves a problem Patterns capture solutions, not just abstract principals or strategies. It is a proven concept Patterns capture solutions with a track record, not theories or speculations. The solution is not obvious The best patterns generate a solution to a problem indirectly - a necessary approach for the most difficult problems of design. It describes a relationship Patterns do not just describe modules, but describe deeper systems structures and mechanisms...

Process vs Methodology
by
hannes
Process 1. a systematic series of actions directed to some end 2. a continuous action, operation, or series of changes taking place in a definite manner: Reference Process ( lat. processus - movement) is a naturally occurring or designed sequence of changes of properties / attributes of a system / object . More precisely, and from the most general systemic perspective, every process is representable as a particular trajectory (or part thereof) in a system's phase space . Every measurement is a process...

New hardware

Ever so often I get this need to buy a new computer. Then I have to ask myself do I really need a new computer and the answer is unfortunately almost always no to the delight of my wife. Currently I have a P4 2.4 Desktop running with XP Pro at home that’s mainly used for internet surfing and as a file server. My work machine is a Dell Latitude D510, not the greatest of lap tops around but it does the job. What nice about is compact and light compared with the “mini mainframe lap tops” some of my...
