Restructuring
by
hannes
Yesterday was a bleak Monday for our project. Due to organization restructuring it looks like we lost our project manager, two out of our four business analyst, the test manager and a tester. Next on the chopping block are the system analysts, developers and more testers. Working in IT you must realize that the financial rewards can be huge but so are the risks. Unfortunately this is easily forgotten when you get into a comfort zone. You like to tell yourself that you are good at what you do and...

Delvera
by
hannes
Yesterday we had the first power outage for the winter in Cape Town so we took the opportunity to go for a drive in wine lands. Friends told us to visit Delvera , just outside Stellenbosch. We had a very nice lunch under the autumn trees at Temara's Restaurant . Afterwards we bough some plants at the nursery at very reasonable prices. A Sunday afternoon well spent. Pattern adoption phases
by
hannes
Jimmy Nilsson quotes Gregg Irwin about the phases you go thru for pattern adoption in his book Applying Domain-Driven Design and Patterns (page 51) You use it without being aware that you are using it. You hear about it, read up on it, thinker a bit. You learn more and start using it explicitly, if naively. You get the fire and evangelize. Something clicks. You learn more and apply less naively and more implicitly. Time passes and you see flaws. You question the concepts. You either forget about...

Consistently inconsistent
by
hannes
The only thing that I can say about the South African cricket team, the Proteas, is that are the most consistent inconsistent team in international cricket. That makes them a very dangerous team to play against because you never know who you going to play. After embarrassing defeats against Bangladesh and the Black Caps you showed yesterday the English team how to play the game. Normally a team either fields or bats well but yesterday they did both with Andrew Hall leading the bowling attack and...

Investment Guarentees
by
hannes
Yesterday I had a very interesting conversation with someone about knowledge investment. Let me explain, I work for an I.T. body shop as a System Analyst. Currently I do work in the life insurance industry but I also have experience in retail and construction. My knowledge as an IT person got two sides. On the one side I have knowledge of the business / industry in which I work and on the other side I have technical knowledge and skills to perform my job. Gaining the business knowledge is more difficult...

Weekend Sport
by
hannes
What a sporting weekend. First up were die game between the Blues and Sharks and what a game it was. I think the Shark showed everyone that it’s not safe in the water with them around. They beat the Blues with rock solid defense and showing that mistakes will be converted into points. Second on the menu was the cricket match between South Africa and New Zeeland. Well South Africa showed that they definitely do not deserve to be called one of the top teams in the world. They totally lack passion and...

Applying Domain Driven Design and Patters
by
hannes
About two weeks ago I went to Kalahari.net to check out the prizes of the books on my wish list and to my surprise APPLYING DOMAIN-DRIVEN DESIGN AND PATTERNS: WITH EXAMPLES IN C# AND .NET was only R305.00. So I ordered it immediately. Last Friday I received my book and showed it to a friend who also wanted the book. When I showed him the link the prize went up to R580.00! Well I was glad I ordered the book the first time because it really is a very good book. So far I only read the first few pages...

Looking for a documentation repository tool
by
hannes
Our project documentation repository problems continue. First some background, we use MS Visual Source Safe as a repository for all our documents. At start of the week we create a new folder duplicating all the documents in the current working folder. The new folder then becomes the analyst working folder while the previous working folder goes to the development team. This is a very crude but effective way of preventing development being done of documentation that is not stable. Back to VSS, it became...

Planning for the next wave
by
hannes
After the rush and stress of the first release of our quotation application we are now busy with house keeping tasks and rethinking some of the decisions we have made. One of the areas that we all agree on that we lacked in was our approach to testing. Our test approach did not compliment our analysis and design approach. We use an iteration approach using Domain Driven Design techniques. That made me Google for testing and I’ve come across of couple of articles. My view of testing was always that...
