Developing on USB memory sticks by hannes

Jeff Atwood from Coding Horror fame recently wrote about USB memory sticks and why we don’t ‘yet’ put our whole computing environment one a flash drive. Basically it comes down to speed according to him. Personally, for the last year or so with no problems, I’ve been using my memory stick to store development code on so that I can easily work between different machines. At work I check the code out onto the stick, take it out and work disconnect at home on another machine. Next morning I just plug...

Getting Orcas by hannes

Getting my hands on Orcas Beta is turning out to be a real challenge; the MSDN download is split into 8 parts each about 740 Mb big. This makes it impossible for me to download at home and very risky doing it at work. So come on Microsoft, please give use an option to mail order it so that I can start playing with LINQ. Untill then the search continue.... Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

New hardware by hannes

Ever so often I get this need to buy a new computer. Then I have to ask myself do I really need a new computer and the answer is unfortunately almost always no to the delight of my wife. Currently I have a P4 2.4 Desktop running with XP Pro at home that’s mainly used for internet surfing and as a file server. My work machine is a Dell Latitude D510, not the greatest of lap tops around but it does the job. What nice about is compact and light compared with the “mini mainframe lap tops” some of my...

How Object-Oriented Programming Started by hannes

by Ole-Johan Dahl and Kristen Nygaard, Dept. of Informatics, University of Oslo SIMULA I (1962-65) and Simula 67 (1967) are the two first object-oriented languages. Simula 67 introduced most of the key concepts of object-oriented programming: both objects and classes, subclasses (usually referred to as inheritance) and virtual procedures, combined with safe referencing and mechanisms for bringing into a program collections of program structures described under a common class heading (prefixed blocks...

Almost Time for VS2005 by hannes

This weekend I'm installing VS2005 Beta 2 on my home machine. Although I received it two weeks ago I deliberately decided not to install it yet because I needed some serious study time which would not have happened with a new Visual Studio on my PC. DevDays really waked my appetite, the time is near, may the force be with me. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Airbus A380 by hannes

If you want to go bigger and better Europe seems to be the place to be right now. Airbus just introduced their new A380 which when operational be the largest commercial airplane with a maximum take off weigh of 580 000 kg. The previous record was held of course by the Boeing 747 which entered service on the 1 January 1970. (34 years and still going strong!) What will make the A380 unique is that it will be a full double decker. Virgin airlines already hinted that they will use the extra space not...
