January 2005 - Posts
Wow, no kidding. One of my big reasons for moving to dotnet.org.za was that I could now get stats. They say that “s___e___x” is still amongst the top few words searched for on the net, and I have definitely just found this to be true. I had a post recently entitled
Hot P_00_RN. So far, my logs I have had 48 links to last post from the search engines FOR TODAY ALONE. Lol, come on people, get to some real work! Stop misusing the Internet!?!
Off
Scoble: a
bluetooth virtual keyboard. I remember seeing prototypes of these things on the net when I was doing Honours in I.S. a few years back and wondering if they would ever see the light of day. Basically, it projects and infrared keyboard right onto your desktop and then picks up where your fingers go. Here is a
single picture.
Yup, that's right. We'll be having our first Nerd Dinner of the year this Thursday,
Feb 3rd, at the Starlight Diner near Tygervalley at 6:00 for 6:30 p.m.. Everyone is welcome, come join us for some geeking out.
Lucky me, I just got my orders from Amazon.co.uk (a colleague brought them back for me, thanks Clint). The first is
Top Gun and the second is
Magnum P.I., season 1. Anyone keen for a viewing, maybe at
Mr Plint's place?
Oh yeah, I've been waiting for this for a while now! The new Microsoft PnP Enterprise Library was released on Fridat. It is a package containing a bunch of the more common Application Blocks, like the DAAB, that have been around for a while into a comprehensive pack. Get it soon!
[Update] - Ha ha, looks like you need to be a registered Windows user to access it. Piracy becomes harder and harder, which is definitely a good thing!
Now that my blog has found a nice new home I decided to set up a new web forward. So, you
can browse to my blog at
http://dotnet.org.za/hiltong/ or you can be super-cool and go via
http://hilton.giesenow.com/
I built a really interesting looking (but mostly static) website a while back for myself but then got into the blog thing so I never put it up. I'm now working on making it into a .Text skin and the basics are almost done. Watch this space...
Yup, just booking now to see it tonight. Very keen because it looks brilliant. Check out the Hero review on Ster Kinekor's website.
Note - I'm on dialup at the girlfriend's house. Man, Internet access is so slow in s.a.! Anyone tried iBurst?
Ok, so I got in via the back door, so to speak, but I got a mention on msdn.microsoft.com. Yippee. It's in an article by Scott Mitchell on dynamically generating asp.net UIs. If you follow the link look riiiiiiiiight at the bottom of the page ;-). Hopefully it'll happen again soon, one day for an article that I write?
Wow, this last week has been mad (well, the last few months actually, but this week's been particularly mad). I've been giving some basic intro .net training to some members of our client's team. Some of these guys did a bit of VB back in the 3 / 4 stage, one did some ASP, one did some vb6, one did some Turbo Pascal way back when, and some have done no programming since their Cobol days 10 years ago. Man, it was an interesting mix.
Nonetheless, everyone seemed to enjoy it, myself included. I tried to give about a 50-50 mix between theory and practice which they seemed to appreciate. I've never really trained before (other than a lot of varsity tutoring) so it was quite a new experience. Its great when you can see that they are getting it though.
So, anybody want to learn .net ;->
Wow, this must be a first! Google recently proposed and implemented a “nofollow” html tag so that the engine knows not to rank an outgoing link too highly off of your site. Read more from Scoble . MSN followed up, virtually within hours. No more drawn out W3C process here!
Followup: A search engine Guru mate of mine then sent me to this link
Ok, not really, but I've now got photo galleries. Yay!
I just noticed yesterday that MSDN Magazine releases its entire magazine digitally as a .chm file. To get the link you have to browse to the physical edition's page though. For example, the front page currently displays the feb 2005 edition but not the link. To get the .chm link you have to go to Editions and then Feb 2005. They also offer the source code as a bundle in a single .exe.
Very kewl, thank you MSDN!
For those Potty fans who don't yet know, the new Harry Potter Book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is due for launch on July 16 (ha ha, my birthday). Some people, Eduard Penzhorn included, think Potty is only for kids but the huge international sales prove that loads of adults enjoy it too (myself included, by the way). This may be why the new book is available in a regular version as well as an adult edition (?) - both, by the way, from Amazon - this is not some wierd porno thing. Anyone know what the difference is?
So the WebMarshal that we are stuck behind now no longer allows me to log in to the Google Blogger engine. It tells me that the login page has been blocked for pornography. Lovely. It so happens I've been thinking of moving for a while anyway 'cos
a) Blogger is dog slow, too clogged and doesn't always work 100%
b) I wanted to move to dotnet.org.za so I could join all the awesome SADev people here :-)
So, without further ado: “Hello Blogginh World” once again.
For those interested in my archive please go throught to the Blogger site here. I'll look at moving some of the entries though.
Also, Armand (who is a legend, by the way!) has been giving me some help with setting up not only my blog but a new website as well. Watch this space for more :-).
(By the way, before you go rushing off, there is NO P__O__RN on the blogger LOGIN page!)
So, in short, look forward to lots more posting from my Jumbled Mind...
