Finding a commong ground

My first blog post, I'm so excited Dog

I've been working with Window Vista (Business) as the main OS and then Ultimate on a virtual environment for quite some time now, to the reluctance of others around the office, I've found that it did not alter my work experience in any way, apart from the small hassles here and there, I find it quite similar in "feel" to that of XP Pro and or Windows Server. But like any new Microsoft operating system, I reckon that there are a lot of things, common and uncommon to the current user, that people like my co-workers ignore, ea: processing power, security, ect.

Two things have really been annoying me in the last couple of weeks, however, but to every problem you will find a solution:

  • SQL 2005 SP2 stopped working
  • Explorer.exe stops responding every 10 - 20 minutes
  • UAC restricts access to firewall

Various reasons for the first one, corrupt installation or bad update of the service pack, or maybe an update from Microsoft that updated the way the service is called, or maybe because I installed mySql onto my machine, overriding the default instance? But something that I have noticed lately is the fact that Vista keeps trying to activate itself after a couple of days. Would tell me that Vista is unable to activate, but after a restart would find it activated and working fine. Haven't found anything on the net as to why this might be, but after uninstalling my "not so very legal" version of Photoshop CS2 from my machine, found that Vista no longers forces itself in and out of activation.

These are just a couple of things regarding the OS that I've come across since I first installed the CTP last year, about this time, and to date I don't think I'll have XP Pro as the main operating system. I just like the way it looks, the added extras to make your work experience seamless and above all, the fact that it's new :)

Welcome to the bad world of blogging. The explorer one I had for a while was fixed by the "performance" hotfix from MS

About JadedEric

I've been developing web applications since the classic ASP reigned supreme (or atleast that's what some people thought at that time). Lately I'm just getting intouch with the inner workings of JSON and AJAX, and other nifty tips and tricks that Microsoft has up their sleeves these days.
