Durban dudes: Pressure Mark! (A sort of poll/petition)

Alright Durban, remember I made my pledge. (Warning: what is about to follow from my fingers to the keyboard is with a smirk on my face). I’ve been meaning to keep my pledge and I’m getting rather ‘frustrated’ that Pretoria is having yet another user group meeting. Mark is supposed to be the organizer but… let’s paraphrase typical IM conversations:

Mark: Hey Justin. How are things going?

Justin: Hi Mark. Depends on what is about to follow in one minute…

Mark: Depends on what?

Justin: Have you got my venue yet?

Mark: No… I’ve been busy.

Justin: Well, that will put me in a bad mood now.

… (Long conversation follows completely unrelated to .NET)…

Mark: Dude, what are you up to?

Justin: Waiting for your word on the venue…

… (Long conversation about what I saw on the bus)…

Mark: Justin, got a minute?

Justin [with some funny display name]: Yeah sure. Did you have a minute to organize my venue?

… (Talk about how busy we both are like Grandpa’s talking about their aches and pains)

Mark: Hi Justin.

Justin: Singing JavaScript developer scripts: confirm(‘Has Mark organized my venue?’).

… (This is made up but you get the idea)…

Apparently Mark will not be busy at the tick of the beginning of next month. So dudes, apply pressure to Mark to organize that venue for me (remember that I feel that one week’s notice would be appropriate).

Relax Mark… I can wait but I’m itching! Just do whatever you need to so you remain employed but please don’t forget me… :)

If you build it, they will come.

Ie, why not take a different approach and instead of saying to Mark (whilst he is snowed under): "Do you have a venue?", why not say to him "Hey, ITDodadMajigs.net is happy to host the event next Wednesday, is that cool with you?"...

As I said, I was saying the above with a smirk on my face so I wasn't serious. The serious part is that I can't wait for him to be free so he can get hold of a venue.

The unfortunate part for me to get a venue is that I hardly know anyone from Durban; nevermind knowing someone who works at a large company.

Justin... I agree with Kevin. Why can't you try organise a venue yourself? So what if you don't know many people in Durban (including companies). Do you think any of us did until we started calling around?

The only way things will happen is if you make them happen. Don't blog about how other people aren't doing the work... you do it. All this blog will do is make Mark pissed off with you for "blaming" him for the problem... rather than actually posing a solution.

Maybe you should get off your high horse and realise that Mark's not there to drop everything he's doing to organise a venue for your almighty presentation that I'm sure will rock the planet. Don't you have arms? Can't you pick up a phone?

Those "typical IM" conversations are a load of horse shit.

I'm a little surprised that the following sentence was difficult to understand for someone with alleged intelligence:-
"Justin, I'll only be able to organise and attend an event once we've gone live with something here at work".

Drop me a mail with your number so we can chat about this. Blogs are very impersonal.

Firstly, i think the reason why you might not know many people in Durban is cos you need to stop being so arrogant, you are representing Microsoft and you need to be more friendly,if you change your attitude, you will find it so much easier cos you will have the support of people and you wont need mark to organize a venue for you, there are many other people out there that might be-able to help that might not be as busy, take a crash course in communication skills or something, in this industry its just as important.

I know the venue we have been using has been pledged by the relevant authority as long as an advanced booking is made. I know Mark has the relevant contact details so let him finish his time of stressing at work and then we can have a meeting. Looking forward to it as I missed the fun at uShaka.
