[South Africa] Kent Beck interviewed on local radio

Tuesday, June 28, 2005 9:49 PM
Kent Beck had a short interview on SAFM tonight. Unfortunately the DJ who conducted the interview was a typically clueless user – at least in respect of her knowledge of the topic at hand.

It was an opportunity missed as far as reaching local developers goes, but in a way it was actually interesting to see (or rather hear) a discussion of the topic from the user’s perspective.

I recorded the interview, so if anyone would like a copy of it *, just contact me via my blog.

I am gonna be a Spaceman!

Thursday, June 23, 2005 7:30 AM

After trying desperately (and unsuccessfully) for a few years to win BB&D's "Flip in a Fighter Jet" competitions, I think maybe it is time stop flogging that horse and become a spaceman.

A spaceman, you ask? Yes! A spaceman, I answer! Really, an actual spaceman, you ask??? Shut up and give me a chance to tell you, I answer...

Oracle is running an awesome competition where the grand prize is a suborbital space flight! Billed as "a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel 100km above the surface and look down at the brilliant curvature of the Earth. Participate in the birth of the commercial space travel industry and inspire future generations of explorers."

Now the fact (and for me: problem) that the competition is based on you having at least some form of knowledge about Oracle's product suite is inconsequential at this point, cause I am gonna be a Spaceman!

There are other prizes as well. Who cares? Enter here.

See, you not only have to be a good coder to create a system like Linux, you have to be a sneaky bastard, too.

[#003] Quote of the day...

Monday, June 13, 2005 5:14 PM

Although about three million computers get sold every year in China, people don't pay for the software. Someday they will, though. And as long as they're going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They'll get sort of addicted, and then we'll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade.

[#002] Quote of the day...

Wednesday, June 01, 2005 4:17 PM

For a long time it puzzled me how something so expensive, so leading edge, could be so useless, and then it occurred to me that a computer is a stupid machine with the ability to do incredibly smart things, while computer programmers are smart people with the ability to do incredibly stupid things. They are, in short, a perfect match.

- Bill Bryson
