[OT] Help with damaged hard disk

Published Tuesday, September 12, 2006 4:22 PM

This is a plea to anyone in the Joburg area for some help. My girlfriend's PC crashed a short while ago and she did not have a backup of her photo archive that was on the disc (silly girl!). The photos mean a lot to her but the +- R3 500 that data recovery companies ask to look at the disc is just to much to shell out.

If anyone has a contact at a data recovery company or has some personal experience with getting data off bad discs and you are willing to help then *please* give me a shout, both myself and my better half would be seriously grateful...

I myself had some good experience with: the program 'Recover My Files'. Try looking for it on torrentspy.com, install a bittorrent client (azareus ?!) and off you go... Sure as @#$ beats R3 500 !! :-)

I'll be going passed one of my clients tomorrow morning (a LARGE hardware distributor). Will ask ppl in the service dep. if they do anything like this. Else, what about contacting a data recovery company and offer an exchange of services?

Depending on what happened, you can still get everything back. If the disk is not physically damaged, there's a good chance of getting all back. If there's physical damage - such as a burnt out motor, data recovery is the only option. Whatever the case, just make sure the disk remains powered off... Mail me your details and we can provide you with a guy that should be able to sort your hard disk out for less than that... Andrew

hi man, is it a desktop?` if it is just get a moderate pc geek to take out the harddisk and put it in another desktop pc, he will most likely be able to read it if it is a notebook, you can buy external cases cheap, take out the disc and then connect it to another pc via usb cable. good luck

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post about recovering the data on my ladies' HD. I think there
