November LAN Session

Pizza, Beer and the fate of worlds hanging by a thread, what more could a guy want for a LAN Session?  Um, a couple of players would be nice.

Anyhow, Colin and I had an awesome playing Call of Duty, Unreal Tournament and Empire Earth.  You all missed out.

Be forewarned, DO NOT challenge Colin at Empire Earth or, his favourite, Age of Empires; he’ll whip like a schoolboy who’s been caught smoking in class.

Explorer Pro

For my December project (providing I’m going to be doing some contract work after-hours) I want to make a windows explorer app. It must be simple, and have the same look and feel as the standard windows explorer. But the difference is that I want to have 2 navigation windows like from old Norton Commander. I currently use Total Commander when I want to do some serious file management, but the interface is dated and doesn’t have the nice XP feel to it. You also don’t have all the views (Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List & Details) which I want to use. Watch here for more updates.

What I did on my holidays

Dear Diary,

Sunday
I went to a fish-braai with Rauri, Rudolf and company.  We dive bombed Rauri’s salt-water pool and tossed Roaan in as well (His wife was kind enough to take a photo of the event).  In typical geek fashion we discussed: cameras; the expansion of wireless and high speed internet connections in South Africa and designed a multiplayer extension of Dawn of War for the Pocket PC.  After lunch we watched Shrek 2 and Once Upon A Time In Mexico.  Although I did take sun-screen I still got very sunburnt!

Monday
Because today was clear and nearly no wind was forecasted, I decided to go up Table Mountain.  After a 5 minute walk from the parking to the base station, I had to wait another hour and a half in a queue for the cable car.  The floor of the cable car rotates so that everyone gets a turn to look up the mountain and see the base cable station.  The view at the top of Table Mountain is incredible!  On the way back an American lost his cap out the window of the cable car.  Got more sunburnt!!

Tuesday
It was slightly overcast so I visited Simons Town.  I was a little disappointed at what I found but I figured it was because of “off-season”; there were lots of cars but I couldn’t see any people.  I drove back slowly along the coast road to see if anything else was happening.  At Kalkbaai I found a parking lot with a couple of tourists getting out, so I stopped and followed them for a bit (No! I’m not naturally disposed to stalking).  I then found The Brass Bell which is amazing as it has 3 restaurants in it.  I went in had to go down a flight of steps to get to the dining area and the tables are practically on the rocks of the shoreline.  There were quite a few people in the restaurant (so this is where they were all hiding) and for anyone visiting Cape Town, I highly recommend visiting the Brass Bell and trying their calamari.  After getting home very drunk I played Call of Duty into the early hours of the next day.

Wednesday
I got a lot done today.  Went to the Two Oceans Aquarium where they still managed to surprise and amaze me by the display of creatures, I also visited the Rhodes Memorial which I don’t think I’ve ever been to before.  I had lunch with my grandparents at the Century Club in the Newlands cricket grounds.  Later I went with my grandfather to a driving range and learned to swing a golf club.  Playing golf with my grandfather was the greatest birthday gift I could have ever received.

Thursday
Because I was leaving early on Friday, I took the morning to pack and chat with my grandparents.  I was then off to Rauri’s to go on a wine tour with Carol and Rudolf.  We visited: Bloemendal; Nitida; Altydgedacht and Dubanville Hills.  Besides the wine tasting we took great pleasure in MSN’ing Iwan and others and sending pictures of us enjoying ourselves.  Eventually it was time to go and pick up Rauri’s kids (or rather, we were running late) and meet Tina at Doodles for “Deep Fried Ice-cream” (you’ve heard right) and Inter-Galactic Gargle Blasters.
