Mail Systems 2 by matt

Recently I've discovered a couple very nice free or cheap alternatives to to big mail servers most of us use at corporates (Exchange; Notes; Novell etc.). My favorites are: Lumisoft's free open-source C# .net based mailserver. Smartertools' Smartermail server (free for 1 domain and 10 users) Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Mail Systems by matt

Call me a geek; but quite often when I recieve mail from someone I dont know or a friend from another company I check out the email header details. I particularly pay attention to the mail client (X-Mailer) they use and most importantly the server system that was used to send the mail. It's by doing this that I've come to realize that a lot of companies are still running Exchange 5.5. I wonder why this is.... Might it be the required jump to AD... or just the old adage “if it ain't broke, don...

Digital Magazines by matt

I saw this on a Tablet PC recently; and thought this is a fantastic new media idea. Much cheaper than printed media (approx. R100 for a 12 month subscription!!). They have a huge selection of international magazines. While reading a magazine you can click on related articles and jump directly to them; click on links to external websites and view a clickable table of contents. It even has simulated page turning!! Introducing Geforce PCX by matt

NVIDIA unveils the GeForce PCX family of graphics processing units (GPUs): the industry’s first top-to-bottom family of PCI Express GPUs. The GeForce PCX GPUs will deliver better graphics and more vibrant digital media to PC consumers through the additional bandwidth and features offered by Intel’s new PCI Express bus architecture. Since the GPU has the largest bandwidth demand of all the PC subsystems, NVIDIA has been a key contributor to the joint definition, development, and deployment...

iPod can already play WMA, but... by matt

it's locked. Chip manufacture Portal Player in San Diego US build the embedded 8550 chip in Apple's IPod. This is the chip that allows the playing of AAC and MP3 - However what is interesting is that the chip firmware by default also allows the playing of WMA. It looks like for some reason this is locked by Apple. The Portal Player chip is used in other Mobile Media Players and by default allows all three formats. This is going to course some concern on the freedom of choice given to users of the...

Adobe Reader speed-up by matt

This app rocks! It disables most of the useless plugins that Acrobat Reader loads on startup thus reducing the startup time. On my system (P4 2k; 512MB DDR RAM) it's brought the startup time down to about 2 seconds!! Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Windows expert speaks out on Windows source code leak by matt

Check out this post on Bink 's site for some very cool documents released by Microsoft on the code leak. Included in them is a logical explanation to why Microsoft thinks you will be irrevocably contaminated if you look at the source. “ Treat it as an infectious disease.” Sounds somewhat like Agent Smith speaking!! IMAP Clients by matt

Omar Shahine blogged about IMAP, Thunderbird, and mail clients and he rates the different mail clients available today. Most interestingly he gives Mozilla's Thunderbird a B- rating; barely beaten by Entourage (which he coded for!) and says, quote: “ Thunderbird is an almost perfect IMAP client for Windows. If you use IMAP, this is the product for you.” WOW! Guess what I'm gonna try now :D Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Music by matt

This last weekend I decided to start ripping all my CD's (at least 100 of them; haven't counted) to MP3. I've been procrastinating about this for a while since I had to make some fairly crucial decisions on how I was going to do this. What format was I going to use? What bit rate? What tool was I going to use to rip them? What tool/s will I use to play them? How will I categorise them? After much pondering the answer was clear: Apple iTunes for Windows. Why? -> MP3; because of compatability with...

Windows OS Roadmap by matt

Here is an interesting article which, apart from mentioning the all-ready-known-about Windows XP SP2, it tells us that we should also be expecting a SP1 for Windows Server 2003 in mid-2004. It will apparently include things like a “role-based” security lockdown wizard. Also, that we won't be getting a Longhorn Server until 2007 (or 18 months after Longhorn Client is released). Here's a nice diagram that summarises. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick...

Longhorn RSS Aggregator by matt

Adam Kinney has developed a small RSS aggregator for Longhorn. You'll need Whidbey's version of the .Net framework (...from what I can tell - I haven't been able to run it on Win2k3). Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Linux Radio by matt

I just found an interesting Internet Radio channel called Linux Live . They're currently discussing a lot of MS related news; including IBM's porting MS Office to Linux and the issue regarding the white paper published earlier this week about “Microsoft Monoculture” and its dangers. (you'll need Winamp ) update: Here's their website Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Rich Text feedback - from the horses mouth! by matt

Yesterday I asked Scott Watermasysk: Hi, We're using your tool on our site ( http://dotnet.org.za ) and were hoping to add functionality for Mozilla browsers to edit posts in rich text. Do you know of either a way to get it to work or a tool that we could plug-in to .Text to support it? We have found http://www.kevinroth.com/rte/demo.htm but are not sure if it can be used. Any ideas? Thanks very much! Today he replied: It should happen in the next couple of months. The current control .Text uses...
