RSS DDOS
by
matt
With all the talk of of RSS feeds becoming a huge overhead on sites' bandwidth I started thinking of something called a 'conditional HTTP get'. It is nicely described here . Could this not be the solution to the problems every one has been talking about? Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Musical preference survey
by
matt
The Register has a story on a survey done by a British training company on IT Professionals music preferences. The outcome is very scary to say the least; especially for us MCP's. I can console myself however, knowing that my music preferences really follow no rules and look more like everything but the surveyed MCP's choices. Maybe we could setup a poll on dotnet.org.za and find out if South African IT Pro's are more tasteful than the British? Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it...

WUS Delays
by
matt
I'm an avid evangelist for SUS (Software Update Services) with my clients and friends. I've been following the developement of the upcoming replacement WUS (not WOES!). Today I got a mail from Microsoft stating that due to the overwhelming input from BETA testers and partner input; including a new Automatic Update client which wil debut in XP SP2 which will improve the update experience; the WUS product will most likely RTM in "the first half of 2005". Recommendation: Download SUS with SP1 today...

Doom 3 release imminent

IGN reports that it's gonna be out soon; like 'next-few-weeks' soon... and it promises to be bad ass! Valve, you'd better hurry up!!! Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Firefox 0.9+
by
matt
If you've been following the Burning Edge you'll know that Mozilla have updated Firefox quite substantially since its 0.9 release. They've added a whole whack of new cool fetaures (amusing too, that some appear to be 'lifted' directly from IE SP2!) . Check out Neil's review of the features. Half Life 2 Specs
by
matt
I've just seen here that Gabe Newell from Valve has revealed what hardware you'll need to run the upcoming Half Life 2. The specs are quite modest: Minimum spec: 1.2GHz powered PC with 256MB RAM, Win 98/ME/2000/XP and a DirectX 7 compatible graphics card. All-Its-Glory Mode: 2.4 GHz machine, with 512MB RAM, Windows 2000/XP and a DirectX 9 capable graphics card. This is good news for me, since I'm currently running a P4 1.7 with 512MB and a Geforce 4200Ti 128MB; so it should run pretty well. I wonder...

Echoes
by
matt
As much as I hate being an echo chamber for news, sometimes there is stuff I just can't resist having my say about (It's also nice for archival purposes). Thus, I am creating a new category <ECHO> on my blog for any echoed news. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Cool Mozilla Extension
by
matt
BugMeNot is an extension that enables the user to bypass compulsory web site registration, i.e. the New York Times. Most users who try and read an article are linked to a splash site, where they are urged to register for their free account in order to view the content. The problem with mandatory registrations is that most people will enter false information to speed up the process, making this form of demographic surveying a moot point. Mozilla 'sploit
by
matt
It's starting to look like browsing on Windows is just a bad idea. Although already patched , security researchers have discovered a flaw in Mozilla's browsers which allows a link to execute arbritrary code on the users machine. It doesn't affect Mozilla on any of the *nix platforms. Get more info here . To keep up to date with the "Burning Edge" of Mozilla's releases, check out this feed .
