"If DNA code can hold the information for making an entire person, surely it can do the same for an integrated medical record? Such is the reasoning of the developers of the Genomic Messaging System." Read more Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Browser Wars
by
matt
Man, I should start a category for this! PC Mag's Dvorak has just published a very interesting article on the current browser wars. This one, however, is not what you are expecting to hear... (IE domination etc.); however showing FireFox's usage statistics are linked to what type of audience your website attracts. Apparently the more " intelligent " your visitors are, the more FireFox is used. Interesting . (Armand: any idea what the most used browsers are on the dotnet.org.za site are?) Share this...

Making Money from Blogging?
by
matt
I never realised "Professional Bloggers" existed (Okay, maybe Scoble); but here we have blogging companies (!) and bloggers get bought out by media companies. Holy crap! I'm not sure about you, but I write this stuff to satisfy my insatiable appetite to talk about technology and to evangelise blogging. (I also get other cool spin-offs like my blog being my own diary ( Oprah says it's healthy); and don't forget cool Blog Dinnners to meet new people! Read more here . "Microsoft Corp. has commissioned a study showing that its .Net development environment is more productive than comparable Java environments, a top company executive said at the VSLive! Orlando conference here. Microsoft Developer Division Corporate Vice President Soma Somasegar said Microsoft commissioned The Middleware Co. Inc. to study productivity and performance comparisons between Microsoft's Visual Studio .Net 2003 and IBM's WebSphere and other tools, and Microsoft fared significantly better...

Enforcing Standards
by
matt
While looking for some information on Windows SAM database security, I stumbled onto this page. Now, if you've clicked that link with IE/Maxthon you'll be seeing this page. And if you clicked it using anything other than IE/Maxthon you'll be seeing this page. A bit over the top? Yeah, I think so. BrowserSpy

I found this site that allows you to run various tests on your browser to see what is being revealed about you and your computer. It's interesting to do a side-by-side comparison of IE/Maxthon and FireFox. Some scary stuff! Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

PC Modding
by
matt
If you're a geek you might enjoy modding your usually bland PC. I heard about this site from a friend. They have tons of really cool modding equipment. (Check out the recent PC modding contest on ExtremeTech) I also saw that they stock the MP3 On Channel MP3 car adapter! Browser preference follow-up
by
matt
Thanks for all the interesting comments on my post about personal standards of browsers; it was interesting to see what you all thought. Some of you said that you would be trying Maxthon; so now I'm interested in your findings! Are you liking it; hating it or stil under consideration? I have, in the interim, tried Opera and am rather disappointed with it. I found it "clunky" to use and not all that ground-breaking. My primary browser is still Maxthon; however the Beta that I'm using (v. 1.0.0220...

RSSBandit System.Net.HttpWebRequest errors
by
matt
I just installed the latest version of RSSBandit on my home PC and I could not download any feeds I had imported from my notebook. All my feeds were reporting the error : Refresh feed 'Feed\Some Feed failed with error: The type initializer for "System.Net.HttpWebRequest" threw an exception. I Googled and found this article on Dare's blog posted on Friday. [This is where it gets weird] However this post details that this error will happen if: you're running the .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 (I'm running...

Abandoning "standards"
by
matt
So what makes a standard anyway? I've been using and evangelising Firefox since the early days ; but today I've given up on it (like others recently have). I'm having a hard time trying to understand why, when FF is meant to be so 'standards compliant', it won't render many pages correctly. Never mind making some sites completely non-functional. So if most sites on the Net work properly in IE's engine (which is not 'standards compliant'); then how come IE is not the standard?! My 'standard' is now...

WUS delay - here's why!
by
matt
The Beta 1 WU service was decommissioned on Friday the 6th of August. See the announcement in the newsgroup dated 8/5/2004 and titled "Re: Continuing to sync WUS Beta 1?" for details. The Beta 2 release of WUS is still scheduled for the 4th quarter of this calendar year. The product team is aggressively implementing the final set of features for WUS, such as: · Revamped administrative user interface · Overhauled reporting interface · Filtering of updates in server to server sync · Migration from...
