Decisions, decisions

I always envy people who post about having to make *difficult* decisions on which gadget to spend their cash on. Luckily this time it’s me; and boy it’s a tough decision...

I have R3800. I need a new motherboard, new CPU and new RAM.

Here are the options I’m considering:

1 X AMD Athlon64 3200+, 800Mhz FSB 754-Pin Processor (128 L1 + 512 L2 Cache)

1 X MSI VIA K8T800, VIA K8T800 Chipset

2 X 512MB PC400 DDR SDRam Memory Module (Dual Channel)

1 X Intel Pentium 4 - 540 ® 3.2GHz CPU, 800Mhz FSB, 1MB L2 (Hyper Threading)

1 X Intel® (Rocklake) Desktop Board D865PERL - Intel® 865PE Chipset

2 X 512MB PC400 DDR SDRam Memory Module (Dual Channel)

There is better stuff out there, but it will end up costing me more than the budget allows. I'm quite happy to avoid PCI-Express for the moment and move to it when it's mature in about a year.

This machine will be used for gaming. I will use my old machine for a proxy, firewall and fileserver.

Any advise/comments from out there?

Personally... I reckon the 64-bit would be nice. I haven't used one myself, but I've only heard good things!

I would go for AMD64. Let's put something in perspective with the AMD vs. Intel. My dad has an Celeron D (320 class) that runs at 2.6Ghz.

I then ran a benchmark from a AMD Athlon 1.3Ghz and the Celeron and guess who came up on tops with processing power? That's right! AMD.

Call me a zeleat (think I misspelt that) but AMD kicks Intel's ass every time. Besides, the same "speed" (clock speed) between the two, AMD is more value for less money :-).

And yes, I think that it would be a great idea to skip the PCI-express. How much faster should your expassion cards go? If any device requires high speeds, then they will either employ the serial port (USB is based on this; in fact, have a look at SATA harddrives vs. the 10000rpm harddrives) or firewire. Besides, so much is built into the motherboard, it is hard enough to find a suitable device (excepting internal modems) to just PLACE into a PCI slot ;-).

One more thing: it will be best if you invest into the 939 socket for AMD64. That way, in the near future, you could possibly upgrade your CPU to the AMD64 FX edition ;-).

Thanks Justin. Good advice. I've since found the Gigabyte K8NS939 with the nForce3 chipset and Socket 939. The socket 939 CPU costs the same as the socket 754.... so why not!
