Windows apps in Linux by matt

This is going to be significant: Alky (pronounced "AL-KEE") is a tool that allows you to convert a Windows executable to a Mac OS X or Linux binary. We are focused on high-end gaming at the moment, though we will support other applications in the future. Our binary translation layer is already working fully for OS X and Linux support is in progress. Of course, Windows applications use a very different set of libraries from Linux or OS X applications so we are also working on a library called LibAlky...

Ubuntu to Kubuntu by matt

Although I prefer Gnome over KDE, some people may like to try KDE just to see how it compares. In this post, the Ubuntu Blog details a way to install the KDE desktop on Ubuntu (which uses Gnome by default). The post also shows you how to prevent KDE apps showing up in Gnome and vice versa. Impi and Ubuntu by matt

Impi Linux will be revamped and based on Ubuntu (read: debian)... “I would just like to announce that Impilinux is being completely being revamped and we have decided that it will be based on ubuntu now. This makes work in core software and more time can be put in to what we think our users like. More info will be given as soon as the 1st development version has been released. Thanks for the great product. Francis Viviers” Cool! That makes the first true South African debian based Linux...

Linux on the desktop by matt

Asa Dotzler of Mozilla/Firefox fame has just blogged about why Linux is not ready for the “Regular Users“ desktop. He breaks it down into four categories: migration, stability, simplicity, and comfort. Reading the article was like thinking out loud for me. It really hit the spot with comments like: When Regular People fire up the Linux desktop for the first time, the browser, office suite, email client, IM client, file manager, etc, each need to carry over as much as possible of the Windows...

First Munich; now Vienna by matt

... have chosen Debian as their cities official desktop OS. This could affect up to 18 000 desktops; however “ It is up to the individual workers to choose if they prefer a KDE Desktop or a Microsoft based system”. It's apparently a custom Debian distro with the KDE desktop dubbed “Wienux”. It will be interesting to see if they report what the “individual workers” decide on! Edit: LOL, Google's translate says it best: “ Who wants, SOURCE way can decide for...

Linux feeds by matt

My OPML is littered with Microsoft related feeds and I'm dying to get some really interesting Linux related feeds into my Linux category. Things like WindowsSecurity.com ; The Office Weblog ; Bink.nu and You had me at EHLO are all great reads. Do any of you out there know of any or subscribe to any Linux feeds? SpamBayes by matt

Since we're all getting spammed to death by our blogs; I thought I'd share what I'm using to cope with spam. SpamBayes is a Bayesian anti-spam filter plugin for Outlook which, based on what you tell it is Spam or Ham (not spam); will filter the incoming mail and dump it automatically into your Junk EMail folder in Outlook. Just train it on some spam/ham mail and it builds a database (which can be backed up and restored in case of inevitable Windows re-installs) of what is good and bad. I have found...

Opendoc by matt

A friend and I have been chatting about the OpenDocument format and why it is a great thing. It is interesting to note that Microsoft is claiming to have opened their Office 2003 XML formats; however there seems to be a lot of doubt (rightly so) about how open it really is . Makes interesting reading... Comments? Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Linux Kernel To Be Re-Written To Counter Microsoft FUD by matt

Not sure how true this is, but Linux Business Week reports : "IBM, Intel, the Open Source Development Labs, and other industry lights are planning to announce that a consortium has been created that will rewrite the components in the Linux kernel that have been found to tread on other people's IP - or at least the 27 Microsoft patents that Linux is supposed to infringe. The aim? To rob Microsoft of the ability to scare customers off of Linux by saying that the operating system is a patent infringer...

Thunderbird by matt

I've been using Mozilla's Thunderbird mail client for quite a while now for all my dotnet.org.za and private mail; and it's really great. As with all Mozilla apps, I find it takes a bit of tweaking and customizing to get it suited perfectly to your habits/preferences. I've been looking for a way to minimize it to the tasktray (ala Outlook). Thundertray does just this. I just changed my shortcut to point to "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thundertray.exe" and then it always runs in the tasktray...
