  • Whidbey (VS2005 Beta 1 released)

VS2005 Beta 1 released today, and just in time too, I have just managed to download Tech Preview May. Oh well that's how it goes, Unfortunatly it's not available for download yet, they gonna post them to MSDN first (Can't wait). then it's download time for the rest. I hope the Team stuff and Class Designer is shipped with this release. More Info here Click here for more
  • SADeveloper Meeting a success

Last night was the SADeveloper CT's meeting, the topic was Live Communication Server. Most interesting, I see a big potential for this product, pity it's only on a COM level at the moment, so you gotta interop into .NET. It would be nice to see some components in .NET V2.0. (Are you listening MS hehe).

Kayode really went into detail; we saw demos in C++, C# and for the die hards VB.NET. Really interesting stuff. We did have some interesting issues upfront, The proxima would not sync to Kayode's Vio, so we linked it to my PC and terminal serviced into the Vio for the talk, What a work around, but we pulled it off.

  • MS Academics get Kwak Enabled

Louis from Inobits and myself had the pleasure of accompanying the Microsoft Academics program members for diner last night, we went to 9032 in cape town, Belgium, Now that meant I had the opportunity to Kwak enable some of them. (which we did, Pics here)
We also had some awesome discussions at the table, if this is what’s to come I feel very comfortable about SA IT of the future.

Now for my sins (actually I love it) I get to spend some time with them again this afternoon in an informal discussion session, should be very interesting, and then they will be attending the SADeveloper meeting afterwards as well.

Oh the names of those kwak enabled (well done)

    Leanne
    Iwan
    Lillian
    Nyaladzi
    Chad
    Taryn
    and of course Louis

  • Aaaaggghh Mono rpm's

Just got RedHat 9 up and running, now trying to install Mono Beta 3 from rpm's, this is where I'd give anything for a windows install. Mono has about 56 rpm's and they must be installed in a specific order, (yip you got it, no indication of what order) so I run one rpm and it tells me it's dependencies, so I try one of them and I get another list, and so on, This is going to take all night. I must be missing something here.

  • More Talks

Now as if I didn't have enough yet in June, we have planned the SADeveloper meeting for Friday 25 June, Kayode who is part of the Microsoft Academic program has offered to do a talk on developing for Live Communication Server. The members of this program are having a meeting at MS Thursday and Friday, Yip you know exactly what I'm about to say, I'm doing an informal discussion session with them before the SADeveloper meeting, topic is “The developer in the real world”, then it will be onto the meeting and they will be attending as well, we are hoping to get interaction between the graduates and developers, should be some good networking opportunities.

Iwan, Leanne and Lillian from MS JHB will also be attending, Me's thinking it's KWAK time again.

  • Yukon

Things have been a bit hectic for me lately, I'm kinda getting behind on my online activity, Yesterday I spend the whole day in a workshop on Yukon, needless to say today I spend the whole day catching up on emails.

Back to Yukon, I've been looking at it I've even presented a talk on it at SADeveloper and I was still amazed at what I saw yesterday, what made it better for me was that Louis had Whidbey, so we got to see the integration into Whidbey which I was not able to show at my talk (yip I used good ol Notepad)

A part of today was spend with our warehouse team discussing aligning their current development with product path of SQL, (yes I know it's only going into Beta 2 soon but a lot of the architecture stuff is bedded down)

We know that in the future math type stuff will be a lot more efficient in C# as apposed to T-SQL, yet keep in mind T-SQL in NOT dead, it if far more efficient for data centric type stuff, so it will live on for a long time.

The only part that concerns me is that there is no migration planned from DTS to the new DTS, its far to different, busy having to look at the current DTS solutions we have to think of which way forward. As for things like Analysis server and Reporting services, downloads have started, we will be playing with those now.

All in all, marketing fluff stripped out this product looks to be an amazing product, certainly aimed to keep us techno geeks busy far into the future. As well as closing the gap between DBA and Developer, long overdue.

  • What a Blast

The LAN party was an outstanding success, with the last man going down after 11pm Saturday night, We were on such a buzz, what with all the Red Bull and Coke I'm surprised anyone slept at all.  Over and above all the sponsors I must make a huge THANK YOU to Microsoft who came and fitted the Bill for all the none sponsored stuff, which was at the end of the day all the drinks and snacks. It was an absolutely fantastic party. Thanks again to all involved, we had such fun.I will be posting Pics to SADeveloper gallery.

  • Night before

Talk about JIT projects, My PM would be proud of me, especially considering we are on time with this project. Pool just got finished, Bank just paid out in time, LAN preparation has just been completed, and I'm finished. I have posted a few night before pics for prosperity. Here is to hoping that all goes well tomorrow, I'm sure there will be lots fun killing happening, Still trying to get a server out through the firewall, then we done.

  • Things are really getting wild

As we draw closer to "the" LAN party I am amazed at how things are comming together, Just got a call from RedBull, they are sponsoring a whole lot of RedBull drinks for the LAN party. This is so Coool.

  • Uninet Installs

Well that was painless, Uninet installed the antenna today, the signal is strong, tomorrow they will drop off a hardware firewall and router, So it looks like all systems go, Friday we will try to expose one of the Gaming servers through the firewall. This should be fun. While all this was going on I was baking choc chip cookies for the LAN party, looks like I have another fan, Pottie the recipe is on it's way.

  • MSDN Whiteboard

Today is the MSDN / SADeveloper Whiteboard walk-in session in Cape Town, I will be assisting along with Rudolf. Just had to pull my mind together this morning. I have been rather wrapped up in the organising of the LAN party, that most technical content in my mind has been squished. But I'm sure we still going to have a Blast this afternoon, here's to wishing myself good luck :-s
  • Gavin becomes Kwak enabled

Last night as part of proceedings, we decided to Kwak enable Gavin, well done dude you are now Kwak enabled, Welcome...
  • Unplugged Supper

Last night a group of the SADeveloper members were invited to supper with Microsoft, I was there to assist, the idea was to hold an infomal discussion in and around the community and Microsofts involvement with developers and the community in general. No topics were left out, and it was great to see the feedback and suggestions the members of this fine community were comming up with, both complements and complaints were noted. Considering I only got home around 11:30 at night I'd say the event was a great success, this and the fact the everyone there was asking for more such events. Thanks dudes, you were great last night..... SADeveloper Rocks!!!!!!!!!!
  • Going to Tech-Ed

Well what do you know, I have been saving for that ticket to Tech-Ed, and what with the pool going in it's been a bit slow, but yesterday I got a very pleasant surprise, Microsoft has chosen a whole bunch of our SADeveloper members and is giving them tickets to Tech-Ed. My name was on the list. Wow thanks Microsoft that has really made my day.
