  • Ten guidelines for deploying secure XML Web services.

I can't take credit for finding this, I found the link on Danny's blog (http://dotnet.org.za/dannyn), and since I'm keen on Web Services I dashed off for a read. Good stuff. So at the risk of repeating another’s post here, here is the link in my blog as well. enjoy: http://www.computerworld.com/securitytopics/security/story/0,10801,93474,00.html

  • OOP presentation

As one gets more and more involved with technologies, especially .NET you get caught up in all the avenues. It's come to my attention that many people are starting out in this exciting arena. It took me back to when we starting out at the company I contracted to, we had to up skill many developers from different disciplines, so we started back at the basics. With this in mind I put a mini workshop together on OOP (the fundamentals).

I planned to offer it to people through Softsource, and we are still going ahead with this. However Rudolf asked me if I'd be interested in offering it at Shoprite, so what we have done is opened it free of charge to SADeveloper members at Shoprite on the 15 Oct.

This way the community benefits and I get some good practice in  :-) .The idea is to get back to basics so if people are starting out, they can get a solid grounding into an exciting world Oh ye this is gonna be a blast. For details people can see here

  • NoteBook review

Well what do you know, they say when you desire something it has a habit of finding you. I really wanted to test out the HP nw8000, and what should happen? One landed in my lap this weekend, and boy have I enjoyed it, this is one awesome machine. I added the review to my articles over here: http://dotnet.org.za/ruari/articles/4254.aspx  :-)

  • Notebook dilemma

Being a Contractor / Consultant has it's good points and not such good point, on the not so good points is that you don't get a nice funky company notebook, unless you buy your own. So it's shopping I go, now we all know Geeks have no concept of how to manage money, so it's off to the internet to find the “baby”, then it's off to the real boss (wife) for the money... kabooom “type mismatch”, “cashola underrun” call it what you may, those funky little radio control toys have eaten nicely into the “New Notebook Fund” HUH?

So it's back to the drawing board when choosing a notebook for “work”, which I'm told is what I do with it !?! Some realities have to set in, wish list and functional requirements don't always meet in the middle. It's time to look long and hard and find something that will do more than you require (For the job at hand) at a decent price. Easy.... Riiiggghht.

Well it's taken a while and eventually I can say I'm ready to go get my new baby (Almost), taking these new rules into account I have managed to single out a few options.

High on list: HP nw8000.(http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/321957-64295-89315-321838-f1-364189.html) Now this is a really cool machine, has all the right spec, the power vs the resources match my requirements nicely, it's not much of a looker, but then it's a workhorse, perfect, except for the price, it fails the “Boss's“ budget rule.

Next on the list would be the HP nx7010 (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/321957-64295-89315-321838-f33-380679.html) , also a very nice machine, a bit heavy, nice looker, with a wide SXGA screen, the power vs resources match in not ideal, gonna have to up the RAM and HD a bit, Budget rule: almost makes it, gonna have to squeeze a sales Rep a bit.

Next the fujitsu Siemens s7010 (http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/products/mobile/notebooks/lifebook_s.html), very nice machine, spec close, power vs resources a good match (cause you can customise a bit), XGA screen (ie 1024x768) which is not idea for me, I want SXGA. budget rule: same as HP nx7010

Outsider: MSI M510C (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/notebook/nb/pro_nb_selling.php?UID=588), Gotta say, impressive, perfect power vs resource match (customisable at pre sale), has a ATI 9600 card, 7 hour battery life, XGA (real pity), not much of a looker, but fit's the budget with room to spare, You can get a SXGA screen overseas, but not in South Africa , at least that’s what distributors say. If it had an SXGA I would probably have taken it there and then, (even though the nw8000 is the machine I really want).

Oh well, Like I said, I'm almost there.

So what's important to me... In today’s world where the Centrino power is pretty awesome already, it's now all about RAM and HD speed and capacity. Requirements on my list are: Decent VGA card, ATI 9200 or better, SXGA LCD (must be greater then 1024x768 on screen), 1Gig RAM, min speed HD: 5400, min capacity 60Gig, would prefer an 80Gig ++). Funny but things like onboard bluetooth don't impress me, dongles are R190 a pop, Battery life 4 hours+, weight 3kg or lower (unless it's a wide screen then I'll put up with a little more).easy access to things like HD,RAM,CPU. As for the CPU, honestly dudes 1.5 Centrino will buz along nicely with these resources, I don't understand why people put a 1.7 ++ Centrino CPU into a book with only 256mb RAM and a 40Gig 4200 Drive, (don't laugh I've seen it, and at places that don't do in shop upgrades), DVD combo or better, as for the rest most stuff is pretty much standard on all notebooks.

  • Got Team Services

Yeeha, Friday I got Team Services with the Sept drop of VS 2005. Now to go buy a bigger hard drive, I've run short on space, wonder why?
  • Missing in action

Bad habit forming here, overdoing it on the activities a bit. So what has been keeping me soooo busy, Now I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you! So for now my blog will just have to be satisfied with the fact that I am still alive and that I promise to tell all as soon as the information can become public knowledge.

What I can say is that that on Friday 17th the SADeveloper meeting was a blast, Deon (http://dotnet.org.za/deon) delivered a mind blowing talk on Managed Direct-X, made us all want to stop what we were doing and get into Dx coding, this is funky stuff most of us wish we had time to play with.

Then Saturday I delivered part one of a 2 part workshop on T-SQL, at first I must admit I was not to keen on offering this workshop, but afterwards I discovered that I had had a blast, looking at doing more of such workshops after I finish part 2 of this one.

The plans for the OOP Fundamentals using .NET workshop is coming on nicely, and of course the Web service ones are starting to look possible (although it has slowed the writing of those articles I promised :-s )

Also those going to Tech-Ed you will get to see what I've been driving mid night oils on, (amongst other things), this is going to be one heck of a Tech-Ed. Just finished artworks for new banners, gotta go through approval, so the sadeveloper leads can expect an email soon. Now to head onto the sadeveloper business cards, Hmm that reminds me I must finish my own cards sometime soon, not to mention my own website. (really! I neglect myself sometimes).

As for the rest, patience, all will be revealed, and soon I hope.  ;-)

  • MVP's relax

Would you believe it, the MVP's in Cape Town took a day off, and pulled into my place for a braai and some well earned relaxation.
    Two rules emerged very quickly.
    1. If you smoke you swim
    2. If you talk shop you swim
Needless to say we all ended up swimming, thanks all what a blast!!

  • Web service Policy

For those like me that have decided that Web Services are more interesting than most other fascinations in life (like bird watching), you will find this an interesting read.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/webservices/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnglobspec/html/ws-policy.asp

No, I'm not trying to digest it this time on the morning, I found it while (funny enough) looking for additional “out of the norm” Web service info for my articles [while waiting for a Web deploy to finish]. I'll definatly read it once I get this beach out of my eyes.
  • VS2005 Team System (Pop, that was my bubble)

Have you seen the requirements to run this Thing!?!  After months of nail biting anticipation I slump off in a sulk, I have been sooo keen to play with this animal and tonight I came to the horrid realization that my little home office just aint gonna cut it. This puts a lot of pressure on guys like me who contract to big Corps who have the hardware but expect their specialist to be testing stuff on their own accord (Ie at home). Oh well guess it's time to buy new hardware, Lots of new hardware.

Oh you want to know what I'm ranting about check it out http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/teamsystem/readme.aspx
Wonder how it'll operate in a VPC hehe, Still hasn't stopped me from starting to download it though, I geek must play, hope the wife will forgive me :-s .

  • SADeveloper Strategy session

Wow what bunch of great leads we have, I must admit I am impressed. The team went away the weekend to strategies phase two of the the goals for the community. With all the feedback we had to go through it was tough going trying to organize the plans in just two short days, but the team did it, Well done.

I think we have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming months. Naturally where Kaylash is involved there will be a surprise or two, there was. Finding out that we hade it into the Financial mails top 100 sites that save you time and money, wow great going, this is a fantastic community!!!

Just for your pleasure I posted some pic’s

  • When Geeks go for a Drink 2

The SADev Leads went away for the weekend for a strategy session, and Saturday night in the pub, look what happened, you just can’t separate Geeks and their toys!

Relax I’ll post more on the sessions and more pic’s soon, but now I’m off to get some well earned sleep

  • MVP's meet with Microsoft Cape Town

Just enough time for a quick post before I head off for an early night, seen as I have to be up at 4am to catch a flight to Joberg for the SADeveloper strategy session.

This week has been most eventful (Most stuff I can't post yet)  but today the MVP's in Cape Town joined the Microsoft branch meeting to see how we can get more involved with the Microsoft staff in our region. I am impressed at the welcome we received, Looks like Microsoft SA is really keen at getting involved with the MVP's. I think this is going to be lots of fun and learning for us all.

Second to that the MVP's have started getting more involved with SADeveloper which in my books is really great as we have a wonderful community full of exciting people who are eager to learn, and with the MVP program showing an interest I'm sure we can bring better, and more technical workshops to the community.

Lastly, letting slip, keep an eye on SADeveloper and my Blog, rumor has it, along with the Academic wing of Microsoft we will be having some international speakers around early October, Shhh for now ;-)

Best I try get some sleep, for if I know the way things work, sleep will be a luxury over the next 2 days in JHB.
