Life.. whats that?

sadeveloper rocks (honey I'm home)

So what if it's 1am, I just have this urge to blog.
A short while ago I posted the following post to sadeveloper, “What is sadeveloper really?” (http://www.sadeveloper.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=59361).

Now I am up at this hour due to a visitor, we were discussing this topic up until now and could keep going until we were both late for work.
So what was the conclusion? hehe you will have to wait for that and in the mean time go to the post above and think hard and post your reply, heck get yourself a visitor and debate it until you run out of coffee.

But in my mind I have come to a point where I had to kick myself (You know, lead by example type stuff), There in the post I posted a 2 Parted challenge
(brief version here - see post for full details)
Part 1. What would your sadeveloper be to you.
Part 2. What would you like to do to achieve this and what are you doing to achieve this?

Then I had a long think (during our discussion) and realized that when I moved to Microsoft I gave up my seat as an sadev lead (which is right for sadev). But I noticed that I was NOT following my own advice to members when as a lead I said. “Sadeveloper is what you make, it's the members community, so go out and make your community great”

So on that note.. I am an sadeveloper member, and sadeveloper for me is about making fellow developers great and together influencing the ICT market so that developers can have their day, and South Africa WILL become recognized as world leaders in development! (This is the short version hehe)

What am I going to do about it. Everything I possibly can, 1st thing that comes out is (and this was pointed out to me) I have a wealth of experience in growing people and helping people to grow themselves and others under trying times.
AND WHY AM I NOT SPEADING THIS WEALTH (Again I kick myself, one of my sayings I use - Knowledge is like water, only spreads life if it flows, otherwise it stagnates and becomes poison and outdated).
So if there is an interest I will be willing to share this knowledge with anyone who is ready to receive it, how? Well that we can work on, either through articles (although I'm a slow writer), or though workshops and mentorship’s. You let me know!!!

Or do I just have a large ego, let me know too, Those who have dealt with me, now’s the opportunity to influence my life yet again. All I can say is, if it was not for sadeveloper, saarchitect and it’s members I would have had a most miserable time relocating to JHB, but sadeveloper and saarchitect members have made a most stressful event bearable.
You are making a difference, a difference in my life and I’d like to return the favour.

Ruari, I think each one of us have our own passions... For some it is development, for some it is a community, for some its a sport, for some their families... And you are going to get people with different levels of passion, different levels of energy for something and different levels of opinions.

It would be great if everybody got involved at the same kind of level of energy, but not everybody is like that. I think the people that are natural at that sort of thing will always come to the fore...

You can steer/direct a community, but I don't think you can inspire them to all be 100% active members, or all be leads...

At the end of the day Ruari, you are a great inspiration to all of us, but when you say "I'll sleep when I am dead", I just sometimes wonder at what cost? What are you giving up to put SO much energy and passion into this?

PS. I don't think you have a large ego.

I've been lurking around the blogs and sadeveloper for a while but this time i have to raise my opinion... You probably posted this with good intentions, but I think you have a large ego and is missing the point.
And I quote: "influencing the ICT market so that developers can have their day, and South Africa WILL become recognized as world leaders in development! " - How are you going to promote SA to be world leaders in development with pool parties and not focus on technical ability? Get togethers can be great, but I don't think that is the most important to building a strong DEVELOPER community...

It's great to hear from you. Looks like I need your help, I see in you post you have a real concern about the technical quality of developer communities in our country, and I'd like to ask your assistance in improving this. Get hold of me and we can chat.
Just to clarify, most of these socials are to build bonding, last night we chatted till early this morning on merits of .Net 2 and differences in the type systems of MS languages, Delphi, and Java. I think that is helping grow the community. Involvement grows communities, join us. I’d love to hear your ideas.

Here is my 2c's worth: What is wrong with a large ego and big dreams? The only way to reach for the impossible is to actually believe you can achieve it and to do that you need a large ego! The only way to achieve great things is to reach for the impossible...

This does not mean you are an arrogant ....!

To our lurker: do yourself a favor and meet Ruari in person. His energy and drive is infectuous, he has compassion and passion. He has great tolerance and patience for people with different views. He will actually listen to your views and value your inputs.

Oh Boy! Am I going to get in trouble with Ruari for this comment. Simply because he is not arrogant.

I am going to side with :( on this one. I have met Ruari in person, and from what I have seen, the only time he listens to your views and values your inputs is when he thinks he can pass them off as his own.

So he ran and grew the CT community, I will give him that, nice one. By extension he can then lay claim to all the great technical achievements they have made so far. Namely: ummm....

Now, as the self proclaimed Father Of SaDev (sorry Simon, sorry Arno et al) he has been hired by MS to replicate ‘his’ great achievements in the local community? Sorry MS, you have been duped. Sure Ruari is a great speaker, and his motivation is infectious to the junior lackies he surrounds himself with, but he is just an empty vessel, making a lot of noise.

How do you like them apples?

I did ask for opinions, and I’m glad to see that once again the communities are able and willing to contribute. Thanks for the feedback.
I must admit :(( has me at a slight disadvantage on this one as I can’t place the context of our engagement. So I’d like to extend the invitation to meet with me so that I may get a deeper understanding of the position.

As for ‘Toffee Apples’, I found them too explosive for my liking… ;-)

Sometimes it is useless to argue..."Answer a fool not to his foolishness". :((, I have no idea how to even defend my friend (who has never stolen one of my ideas) against baseless accusations. I will try anyway.

As for who I am? Well, I wish I still was a junior, but unfortunately my age counts against me. As for lacky, my husband and I count Ruari and Coral as our best friends - definitely not lackies.

As far as the history of SADev is concerned, maybe you should make very certain of your facts before you throw around wild accusations. Find out exactly what each person's role was. If you know all the facts, you will not slander Ruari. SADev has 2 fathers - Simon and Ruari. No one has ever denied this. SADev grew out of two seperate communities - a CT based one under Ruari's leadership and a JHB one under Simon's leadership. I do not know how much more I am allowed to disclose, so until it is clear you will have to wait for the next installment.

As for MS - I think they got a bargain :). If you have been through the interview process at MS, you will realise that it is not easy to fool them. They might actually also know more about the history of SADev than you do.

It is a fact of life that we cannot like everyone we meet, but surely we need not attack them just because of our own prejudices or gossip we heard.

Ruari might make a lot of noise, but he is not an empty vessel. As for you...why hide who you are?
