• Dr David Woods farewell concert

  What a treat, tonight my wife and I were honoured to be able to attend the farewell concert of DR David Woods, Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University, who retires early next year. It's been such a long time since I was at a concert, wow! With pieces by the Johannesburg Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra I just sat there in awe. Dr Woods has been Vice-Chancellor since 1996 and has seen Rhodes through the challenging times that Academia has faced the past years, with all the changes...   Every year Deloitte’s runs the “Best company to work for” awards. This morning they aired the awards on Telly. Not sure who managed to get to see it, all I know is that we were glued to the TV.   Last night we had my sons schools open evening, and as part of this evening there was a presentation by a leading consultant on Discipline. Now being a parent gets you into interesting situations, and going to school events can be classed as just that. • Geeks with/are? kids weekend off.

  Wow what a weekend. When one starts a new job it takes time to things to settle down; especially when you relocate to do it. This last weekend I decided 'NO Computer' and to do the family and extended family thing. • Firefly Runs Tech Day at Limpopo

  The Firefly Tech day at Limpopo day was an outstanding success. Mr Devan Naidoo did an opening talk on designing a gaming space. Prof Siweya then presented a talk on AI in the coding world. And I managed to get my say where I presented a talk on the Success of Communities(Firefly) / Imagine Cup in the growing of the local software economy. Following the talks a LAN session was run by Izak where the students got to try out their gaming skills. This ended up in the winners taking on the Hosts (Us)... • Home again (Imagine Cup 2005 : The end)

  Well I loved Japan , what a great place, I really enjoyed the Imagine Cup (No time for sleep). But as they say in the classics “All good things come to an end” and this years Imagine cup has done just that. The South African team sure learnt a lot, met a lot of great people and are looking forward to next year which will be held in Delhi India . From what I can ascertain the theme for next year will be “imagine a world where technology enables us to live healthier lives”.... • Imagine Cup Day 4 (Final Presentations and Online Winners)

  Oh my word, today the online winners were announced, and we were all invited to enjoy the presentations of the final 6 software design projects and the Short Movie sections. What can I say, not a lot, I really had the lump in my throat today, what creativity, what innovation, well done to the 6 finalists, it's really great to see the enthusiasm for technology amongst these students. • Imagine Cup Day 3 (Final 6 announced - maybe)

  And……. Well today – no competition, Imagine cup competitors were treated to a trip to the Sankeien Gardens. ( www.sakeien.or.jp ). Wow what an amazing place. We took plenty photo’s and got to see a part of the garden the public don’t. Then it was relaxing, and off to the digital dinner where we watched the Rendering winners apps. • Imagine Cup Day 2 WOW!!

  Suspense killing you yet? Don’t feel alone, I practically have no nails left. (Gotta stop biting them) Well all I can tell you is that after our two presentations my adrenaline was pumping, it’s almost as if I’m in the competition. (These main judging presentations were 25 minutes each, which included slides, live demo and Q&A - butterflies I tell you!) What great delivery, what a great system.
