Silverlight for Windows Embedded
“Silverlight for Windows Embedded” is finally released!
“Windows Embedded is a componentized, real-time operating system to deliver compelling experiences on a wide range of small footprint consumer and enterprise devices. ”
With the release of “Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3”, developers can now create rich user interfaces using Silverlight! Or can thy? Is “Silverlight for Windows Embedded” == Silverlight?
The short answer is no, not yet!
You can not browse to a silverlight website and expect it to work on the device! So, what is “Silverlight for Windows Embedded”?
“Microsoft's Silverlight technology comes to Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 as an out-of-browser, native code implementation, and the presence of Silverlight for Windows Embedded should deliver the foundation for rich UIs on devices powered by the OS. Some of the features Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 has been packed with include the ability to allow designers to include panning and zoom, touch, and gesture input right from the start, deepening their knowledge of Silverlight, Microsoft Expression Blend and Internet Explorer Embedded, as well as a improved connectivity with Windows 7-based PCs via Windows 7 Device Stage and Microsoft Connection Manager.”
The key words in this description is out-of-browser and native code implementation! Currently a “Silverlight for Windows Embedded” application will run out of the browser and only support native C++ (No managed code)!
*sigh*
So it’s not Silverlight? Not yet! But it is definitely a step in the right direction! We can expect to see many more innovations on the device level in the future! The bar is definitely being lifted and consumers will soon start expecting rich user interfaces for their devices! Just look at the today screens of most popular smart phones today and imagine what will be possible tomorrow!!!
