Why is Windows XP Embedded not popular in South Africa?

This is a question I have been asking myself for a while now... Why aren't more people using XPE? Let's start by looking at the pros of XPE: Disclaimer: This article is not about XP versus Linux or any other OS... The article only highlights why you should consider using XPE and not XP/Vista... Why use XPE and not XP professional? Well, XPE is first of all +/- 30% cheaper than XP Pro. This might not seem like a major difference but a typical project roll out of XPe devices are usually high...

Using Bluetooth in .NET

I am busy preparing for a talk on Windows XP Embedded. The talk is aimed at developers showing an example of an end-to-end embedded device being developed. The 2 part talk focuses in part 1 on the development of the application and in part 2 on the XP Embedded operating system for this embedded device. The application that will be developed is similar to the Kodak Picture Kiosk. The application will accept content (photos) via Bluetooth and allow the user to manipulated and print this content. Technologies...

XPE Weekly (31 August 2007)

Well, I have definitely neglected my XPE blog for a while now... I am also trying to move my XPE blog to XPEFiles and only keeping the .NET stuff on dotnet.org.za. As soon as my blog is setup, I will post the link! This will probably be my last post about XPE on the dotnet.org.za. I thought I would start off by supplying links to some cool devices I have found that use XPE! What better way to start off than a virtual bartender? http://www.windowsfordevices.com/news/NS7609485152.html Other devices...

XPE Weekly (29 July 2007)

Windows XP Embedded is a wonderful operating system but why should I use it? It is binary compatible with Windows XP Professional and supports full Win32, so why can't I just use XP? Well, in the next couple of XPE weeklies, I will try and answered this question by covering the embedded enabling features of XPE. This week, I will start with the Device Update Agent. Ever wonder how you would update your operating system, install new drivers or update your applications on an embedded device? How...

XPE Weekly (10 July 2007)

"Microsoft® Windows® XP Embedded provides the ability to build a customized operating system image which contains the components and technologies that are appropriate for your specific device. The image may contain customized device drivers and applications, and in some cases, it would also be appropriate to boot the Windows XP Embedded device directly into a customized application, or shell. This could prevent users from switching applications, accessing the control panel, or underlying filing...

XPE Weekly (05 June 2007)

Welcome to the first edition of Windows XP Embedded Weekly… Based on popularity, this might only be a monthly or bi-weekly updated post so the name might still change! I will start by answering two of the most common questions briefly: Q) What is Windows XP Embedded A) XPe is a componentized version of Windows XP Professional. It uses the exact same binaries. Q) Why should I use XPe A) Smaller footprint, Win32 API Support & Embedded enabling features are just some of the advantages Tips &...
