Last Friday my service provider (staying anonymous for someone's benefit...) phoned me informing me my contract was up for renewal. Yeah, I was kind of aware it should be around the time but I've been so busy with life (just surviving most of the time) that I just didn't get to it yet. So after the call I decided to just go and browse around to see what is available (since I haven't been paying attention to what is new these days). At first the IMate K Jam caught my eye but then I...

Gigabyte made a small video clip of their I Ram drive showing off how fast a machine can boot up. No joking, no cheating - it went from running, shutdown, restart to up and running in less than 10 second! That is f@#king amazing! http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-51784544344753709 The only downside is the cost of the drive plus that it can only be up to 4GB currently. Just imagine having a drive like that for a Laptop. No more wasting power to spin up, wait for Windows to load up. You can...

So far I have not paid much attention to fancy speakers but since Rectron were having a special on their Gigabyte 2.1 speakers I decided to try them out. I am impressed with what a difference it can make to the sound my PC can make (and I don't have a fancy soundcard either - just plain AC97). It's amazing how these two normal size speakers (compare to normal PC speakers) can sound so much better. Of course the sub woofer makes a huge difference too so those nice low sounds come through as well....

Alhough too late for the PDC trip I finally got my own laptop. I opted for the new MSI 645 laptop which I got through Pinnacle Micro. Although it might not have all the fancies like other machines (like playing multimedia while not switched on) it is a small powerhouse of performance. The specs of mine are: CPU: 1.86GHz Centrino Pentium M RAM: 2GB HD: 100GB DVD: Dual layer DVD writer Screen: 15.4" wide screen plus some new technology to make it brighter from higher angles GPU: NVidia GeForce Go 6600...

I've been looking around for an alternative to store all the hundreds of pictures I'm going to take on my PDC trip. Getting a laptop is out of the question...still cost too much. Originally I thought of getting just one huge CF card to put in my camera and hope I can fit everything on it. Then I came across a product one of my suppliers sell, the Apacer ShareSteno. It is a portable hard drive plus it can operate without a PC...yes that's right, without a PC. It's great for people on the road that...

This is a topic that both inspire or deter people. This morning I noticed there was an update for the motherboard I have (Gigabyte K8NXPSLI f8). Actually I don't really need the update as it was only to add dual-core support to the motherboard (and I don't have a dual core CPU yet... damm). So I downloaded the update with good intentions. I've done several bios flashes before so this one should have been just 'routine'. After extracting the bios update and saving it to the hard drive I ran the bios...

In my next life time when I'm stinking rich I want to own a PC like this: Now imagine playing with a machine like that? *sob* Some guy got lucky and was allowed to play on this machine. Its a 8 times Opteron with Dual cores! 128 GB of RAM! Now my work pc really feels like .... *can't say that out load* Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

For those of us lucky enough to own an AMD 64 (for short) there is an online guide how to 'properly' configure and overclock if you wish your machine AMD Athlon 64 General Overclocking Guide Except for the overclocking tips it provides some good information about the AMD64 architecture. It is well worth the read just for that. I recently downloaded the cool & quiet drivers from AMD and it makes a huge difference in how much heat the CPU outputs - not that mine was running hot anyway since it is a...

Ok, this time the power supply guys seems to have gone over the top. How would you like an 850W power supply? No, I'm serious!. Check it out here One of these days you'll need a nuclear reactor to power that piece of metal sitting on your desk. I have no idea where you gona put the reactor but... it might be cool to say "hey, I've got a xxxx Megawat powersupply for my PC! This is meant as a watered down rant about the lack of knowledge some sales people have on their products. I have a (lets just call him a customer) customer that specifically wants a certain CPU (AMD 64 S939 3500+ Winschester core) but every time I phone my suppliers I have to explain from the beginning what exactly it is and why its different from the ones they have. On the one side I can understand that they are not experts on the products. They just sit behind a computer and read whatever their...

AMD has released/leaded some more details on the upcoming dual core AMD 64 processors. There will be 3 versions (4400+, 4600+ and 4800+) initially. They will be known as AMD Athlon 64 X2. Reminds me of a certain movie... More details on: http://www.hexus.net/#AMD-dual Intel is going to have a real fight up their ally to just catch up, never mind be ahead. I was reading a link off Windrivers.com interesting about the latest range of Barracuda's much improved features and find it interesting that a 7200 rpm drive can compete with something as fast as the Western Digital Raptor. Not that the Raptor is a bad drive - quite the contrary. If however you compare the drives on things like value for money then it shows a completely different picture. Cost wise (example) the 160GB Barracuda is almost half the price of the 74GB Raptor at relatively the same performance...

A while ago Tom's hardware did an article about the Intel 3.8 GHz P4-570. On one of the pages there were two interesting charts comparing thermal output for variuous CPU's including the latest (then) AMD 64's and the Pentium range. It turns out that the latest AMD Athlon 64 series is by far superior in terms of how much heat it generates. Look at the Winchester CPU's and you'll see they are right at the bottom of the chart - which is a good thing. Even at full load the thermal output does not rise...
