Many times you hear people saying went to a dark place and they could see millions of stars... Well, it turns out that it is not really possible to see that many even if you had the eye sight of the six million dollar man.... In reality you can at most see around 2500 stars even in the best of conditions - aka perfectly dark sky. The total number of stars visible to the human eye on Earth is around the 8500. Of course you can only see one half the sky at any one time (unless you can see through the...

I while ago (ok, some years ago) I stumble across a NASA web page that let you calculate how big the impact of a meteorite is going to be. You simply fill in some numbers like how big the 'projectile' will be and so on and it will calculate a few things for you like how big the resulting crater will be plus a whole lot of other useful information like the big the earthquake will be etc. The URL is http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/ Just as an example, I have specified an object 50...

I don't know if anyone else noticed it lately but it seems that everything on sites like digg, slashdot or even codeproject soapbox ends up being spammed by americans fighting over politics. It is getting to the point where is really is not useful to try to read the comments of any stories anymore. I know they are passionate about their country, leaders and being either republican or democrat but when it starts affecting everything that does not include politics then... This morning there was...

It seems that even astronomers can have a little humor as well. Those not aware of it the IAU recently declared that Pluto is no longer considered a planet (dwarf planet now) and therefore we now only have 8 planets in the solar system. Today I visited the web site www.nineplanets.org looking for some info and then saw their 'quick and easy' correction for the name/number of planets... Very clever! Ever wished you can make something 'useful' of your browser startup page? Then have a look at http://www.tiddlywiki.com/ Done in pure Javascript it allows you to create a completely customizable 'home' page that requires no server side for processing and storing your 'stuff'. In stead of having to create a plain html page which you maintain with notepad or something this thing maintains itself (literally). Any changes are saved back to the actual html document. Apparently...

Perhaps not entirely accurate but funny how some of the following seems true. What does your browser reveal about you? So, who's still using IE 5? Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

About two years ago I signed up with Uninet as my service provider and was for the most part kind of happy with them. They had their off times but usually came back after a short while. The last couple of weeks it seems things have gone from ok'ish to just plain bad. The service interuptions are now regular and there is little to no after hour service available. The operators they seem to put on call sounds like they don't want to be there or you are interupting them while they are probably...

Aside from the downloading updates issue I must say I'm very pleased with Half Live 2 Episode 1. The game graphics is outstanding and the game plays is very enjoyable. Valve has a winner with this game - if only they can solve the 'issue' of having to download more than 2 GB of updates just to play the game! Can someone please just wake them up so they can realize not everyone has Gigabyte Internet connections? Anyway, I like the subtle changes in the game with having a second player (Alyx) accompanying...

Just is just a rant so if you don't like these kind of things don't read any further. Recently Valve released Half Life 2 Episode one and I liked the original Half Life 2 enough to actually buy it. I though I'd continue doing the 'legal' thing and buy the game (episode one) to play it. But apparently Steam doesn't care about people buying the game legally and still expect you to download a 1.5 GB update before you can even attempt to start playing the game - no option to just play the game after...

This is a trick that help (but not totally solves) with the problem of Firefox that can consume huge amounts of memory. http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/03/26/this-may-help-your-firefox-memory-leak/ At least with this tip you can lower the memory usage when minimizing the browser. This should be part of the next bug fixes from Mozilla! Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!
