I posted a link on Sadev about an article I discovered on the net (ironically from a computer hardware related site) in which they tell about Microsoft planning to open 30 new R & D centers in '3rd world' type countries. South Africa was conveniently or deliberately left out. It made me start thinking how much do we really do (developers and Microsoft employees of this country) to encourage research into new development and other markets. The government is pretty useless to expect pushing such...
Thanks to Ruari we can give comments and suggestions of features we would like to be added/changed in future or updated versions of Visual Studio. Have a peek at: http://www.sadeveloper.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=65456 Speak up now or forever hold your... well, just go and say how you like it or not - and why. It feels like yesterday when the year got started and there was still a whole year to look forward to. Now, there is little less than a month left of it. So many things happened but I had so many more ideas and plans for things that I wanted to achieve. I guess now they'll have to shift over for a next year. At the beginning of the year I had ambitious ideas about my sci-fi story universe. While the plan is still to get to it I have not done anything further about it and it does not seem that it...
Yesterday we had our November SaDev meeting and had Roger Wolter there to talk to us about SQL server 2005. One of the things he talks quite a bit on was the new broker services. I realized I've not paid enough attention to all the new SQL server technologies since I did not even know it existed! I've been much more interested in Visual Studio (Whidbey) and C# 2.0 The interesting bit (one of the) I learned yesterday is that even SQL Express supports the broker services (with limitations) and that...

This is a 'gentle' reminder that we have a meeting this afternoon at Microsoft where you can get to ask some of the actual people that worked on Visual Studio a few questions and hear what they have to say. This include people like Roger Wolter and Eric Lee. It starts at 19:00 at the new Microsoft offices in Pinelands. They are now in the office park where Softsource use to be and AST still is. Hope to see you all there! Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! |...

It seems the VS is becoming a bigger and hotter thing by the day. We have now another 'International speaker' that will be participating - Eric Lee, a 'Product Manager' (yeah, everybody at MS is some kind of Product, or something manager I know). Per his description: " Eric Lee is a Product Manager at Microsoft. He has worked in testing and development at Microsoft for just over four years. Before Microsoft, Eric worked at a small company in Toronto. Most of Lee's experience has been in GUI components...
One of the disadvantages of having 'seperate' express versions for different languages is that if you have to use say C# and VB for different purposes it becomes quite a slep. Personally I prefer to work with C# but for the .Net Juniors program I'll need to use VB Express since that is the background they are coming from for a number of people. I suppose we became 'spoiled' with the full visual studio that supports all the languages/tools. Thankfully you can install them side by side - I've tried...
During Tech Ed I led a session on BizTalk (general stuff). It seems we in south africa might benefit from learning more about both the technology and the product as shipped by Microsoft. I was wondering if others feel the same and would like to participate in some sort of user group? It is possible to create some Yahoo or google group where people can ask BizTalk related questions or even just post tips. If there are people interested please let me know through my blog : http://dotnet.org.za/rudolf...
Something all of us like... free things. Thanks to Ruari for sending me this link. There is a free book available online for upgrading VB6 to .Net at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vbrun/staythepath/AdditionalResources/UpgradingVB6/default.aspx This will be a great asset in the .Net Juniors sessions! It might be the last day but Tech-Ed still rocks! So far its been one big rush and I enjoyed it very much. I gave my first Chalk and Talk session on BizTalk and it went fairly well. Next year I definitely want to do it again! Thanks to Microsoft for the oppotunity to be here and contribute to tech-ed myself. Yesterday we met Julie whom herself leads a community usergroup in the state. She gave us a lot of tips and ideas how to improve things on ouir side. But, got to rush for another session! Share...

This last week has been one big rush ( a good one) I learned so many new things, not just Microsoft related but also that there is a 'bigger' world out there that is vastly different from ours yet many things are still the same. Don't ask me to explain that last sentence because it only makes sense if you have been 'out' of our little world for a while - hehe. One thing I can mention is that the Americans (more specifically those from Los Angeles) know how to drive properly. They actually stay with...
With just about 3 hours before I take off (the plane more technically) my PDC experience is about to start. Wish me luck. LA doesn't know whats going to hit it! I'll try to keep the news flowing whenever I get to some Internet connected PC :p Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

Tonight we have another .Net Juniors session at the waterfront. The topic is going to be ASP.Net - one of the main topics why many of the 'juniors' enrolled to these sessions. The one thing that still bothers me is that we lack a bit of equipment to make it easier to present these sessions. Personally I cannot afford a laptop or something similar at this stage. Poor old Hilton have some bad luck with his one being in and out of service the whole time. If someone perhaps knows where we can get a ...
This is the last week before I go to PDC. The nerves are starting to work overtime. There are still a couple of things to sort out so hopefully I will get everything done before my flight friday afternoon. In total I'll be in the air about 24 hours (give or take a little). So keep your fingers crossed that I won't be sitting a hole in the plane...or that I'll survive that! hehe Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!
