25 November 2009 – An Oxymoron’s Guide to PHP on Windows

Overview

For the longest time, the utterance of "PHP" and "Windows" within the same sentence meant the speaker was either temporarily insane, or horribly misguided.

In 'An Oxymoron's Guide to PHP on Windows' you'll discover just how much the situation has changed in the past 12 months. Thanks to Windows Server, IIS7 and FastCGI, running PHP on Windows finally makes a great deal of sense. It performs admirably and facilitates integration with familiar Microsoft technologies like ASP.net and Silverlight.

Join Tim Keller (@timkeller) for a technical, yet light-hearted, talk about this and more.

Speaker Bio – Tim Keller

Tim Keller is a Cape Town-based entrepreneur, photographer, blogger, and developer. He studied a BSc in Computer Science at UCT and has been building applications with PHP and related web-technologies for the past four years.

Tim was recently invited to present at both Microsoft DevDays and TechEd Africa on the use of PHP with IIS, effectively marrying the Microsoft stack and Open Source technologies. He was voted one of top speakers at both conferences.  Tim heads up Umoya Networks's software development and is currently focused their "staffroom" product.  staffroom is an innovative Web2.0 offering aimed at solving many of the administrative headaches facing teachers.

28 October 2009 – Principles for package design: Where must my classes go?

Overview:

A key question we face as developers is “how do I structure my projects (packages) and dependencies so that my code is easy to change?” In this talk, Stephen and Trevor will cover some of the details of this concern, presenting six principles of package granularity and stability and demonstrating how to use NDepend to easily manage dependencies.

Speaker Bio – Trevor Green:

Trevor has been developing software professionally since 2004. Focussing on object orientated development and Microsoft technologies, he currently holds a senior developer position at Allan Gray Retail.

Speaker Bio – Stephen Young:

Stephen has been involved in software development since 1999. He spent some time in the UK consulting on behalf of Borland, Microsoft and Rational to companies like British Telecom, Channel 4 and Audatex. After that he joined DVT in Cape Town, South Africa and worked with JP Morgan, Direct Axis and various other local companies on enterprise projects. He is currently dev manager and applications architect for Allan Gray Retail.

26 August 2009 – SOLID Part 2: Invert those dependencies

Overview

In SOLID Part 1 we learnt about the Single Responsibility and the Open/Closed Principle, two large steps towards software design elegance and maintainability. We then got really confused trying to work out what Liskov was talking about, but deep down knew it must be a good idea.

In SOLID part 2 it all starts to come together as we briefly explore the Interface Segregation Principle before diving into Dependency Inversion and Inversion of Control. We'll explore what it means to invert dependencies, and how this subtle and simple mind-shift will forever improve your code, and likely change your life. After our heart-rates have settled we'll take a look at StructureMap and Unity, exploring how these containers make Dependency Inversion simpler, and how we can use them.

Speaker Bio – Ben Hart

Ben is currently a Senior .net Developer at DVT. He's been developing software since the late 90's, and worked with the .NET framework since it was in beta. More than anything, he believes that the cost of developing software must be measured over its lifetime, and that the quickest route to develop a feature is void if it results in less maintainable code. This tenet has sent him on a journey towards software simplicity and elegance, one he'll likely never end.

29 July 2009 - Understanding Microsoft ASP.NET Under the Covers

Overview

You might know why the light turns on when you flip the switch or what happens when you turn the key in your car, but do you truly know what happens, in detail, from the moment you request an ASP.Net page to the moment the HTML appears in your browser? In this session we step through that process and every step in between, learning more about the ASP.Net architecture and how it can achieve so much more than just serving pages. If you want to learn more about the ASP.Net pipeline, page lifecycle, controls, handlers, modules, page parsing, request, response, etc. then this is the talk for you!

25 February 2009 - Entity Framework: A scenic tour

Overview

Join us on an introductory tour of the ADO.Net entity framework, an advanced data access technology that bridges the gap between the database schema and objects in your application. We will explore the new mapping capabilities that allow one to map unwieldy database tables to neat objects that make use of object oriented principles such as inheritance. Queries will be demonstrated against this new Entity Model using both Entity SQL and Linq to Entities. We will end off the tour by briefly touching on some of the more advanced features of the framework.

26 November 2008 - SharePoint Server: Creating Solutions with the Business Data Catalog

SharePoint Server: Creating Solutions with the Business Data Catalog

During this session, learn what the Business Data Catalog (BDC) is, why you would want to use it, and how to create applications that leverage the BDC. This session demonstrates what functionality the out-of-the-box BDC Web Parts provide and shows how they can be leveraged to quickly create applications inside SharePoint without writing a line of code! The session also demonstrates how custom Web Parts and Windows Forms Applications may be used to accesses BDC data when the out-of-the-box BDC Web Parts don’t meet the needs of a project. It also demonstrates how to easily configure Enterprise Search for BDC.

Please note that this is a level 400 presentation.
