To be honest Pieter, I don't know. It is an old box that we use for testing and it is very unstable. Earlier the day the box just 'died' and after getting it up again, I got the problem with IIS.

This solved my problem I've been having trying to start windows firewall in SP2. I couldn't start the " Remote Access Auto Connection Manager" that was needed to start it. I turned on 'even logging' and I was able to start it! THanks SO MUCH! I've only been trying to fix this for 6 or so months! sheesh.

This fixes the ftp service too. At a guess IIS must be able to log the services starting and stopping to start or stop the service.

If IIS does not start try this. Start >Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services Start the service Eventlog and also change the Startup type to Automatic Also open the below files located in Winnt\System32\config folder using notepad and clear all the text and save it. AppEvent.evt SecEvent.evt SysEvent.evt This should resolve the issue.
