Jo'burg Radio Stations???

As most of you know by now, Armand and I moved to Jo'burg. Yes, at last we gave in and left our little boere town and came to the big city (no, that is not how I see it, but most Jo'burgers view ;-) )
I will miss Pretoria, but a change was definitely necessary - I lived in one place for way too long now. And off course there is the traffic issue... Armand is a loooong 3 km from his job and I am about 7 kms from mine - it is heaven. At last I can actually enjoy breakfast, read some mail and even go for a run without being late for work!!

So everything is first-class, except for one thing - what the hell do you listen to in this city??!!! All the radio stations play crap! In Pretoria we had TuksFM, which may not have the best DJ's (c'mon, it is students after all), but at least they play music that I can listen to right through the day... I’m going to spend the rest of the evening burning CD’s that I can listen to!!!

And another thing, as a new Jo’burger, do you have suggestions for places that we can go to? Especially on Fridays :)

Well I know of a few places in the randburg area.

To see SA rock bands play, go to Vegabonds on the corner of Bond and Hendrik Verwoerd. There is no cover charge and drinks prices are fair. Also nice atmostfer.

The also in randburg there is a 24 hour pizza place called sunrise. Very nice place with a good vibe. Don't ask me the address though.

OPn saterday nights only out towards Mildersdrift at some hotel there is a place called Red Room. The place reminds me of shaft back in the 90's. But note, this place is only open on a saterday.

Then the is places in Mellville, Rosebank, etc etc.

The in Edenvalle there is offcourse The Doors Night club on Van Ribeeck Ave.

I mention these places couse you listened to Tucks. They do play the best music and in some places you'll be able to recieve the broadcast.

Welcome to JHB guys!

Radio stations: If you want music... listen to CD's; If you want mindnumbing crap-chat... listen to 94.7; if you want decent programming ... listen to 702AM.

Clubs: Hmn... don't do 'em anymore really.

Thanks for the suggestions!!! I think we'll definitely try Red Room - I just have to see whether it is close to Shaft ;)
I love the Melville vibe, just too far to drive to often.

We live close to Sunninghill...

I have now stocked my car with cd's :)

I accidentally came across your site the other night and have to add to the comment on Radio Stations / SA Music in general!

I proudly represent Clint Cunningham and his band – Clint & Co. What to do on any night of the week – go to a Clint & Co’s show!!! Man, they are the BEST live band in South Africa! The musicians in the band are all enormously talented, international class performers and instrumentalists. Please visit their website: www.clintandco.co.za for their gig guide (and might I add there is a very interesting letter from Clint called “My Love” which addresses the whole radio / tv / sa music dilemma). Hope to see you at the next show!!

TUKS FM ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've moved to the Western Cape and KFM plays the same stuff all day long and it drives me crazy! It is slit ur wrist stuff!!! Seriously! All they play is love songs, which being a girl is nice to hear once or twice.....but come on 5 times the same song in one day!!!!!!!!! Half the time it's the depressing love songs about how the person's been left and so its sombre and sad and depressing then the other half it's all about falling in love and the joys there of.. that's about the only time i can actually bare listening to it. Thanks I'll go back to 5fm, it's the only stuff thats a quarter decent. There will never be anything like tuks fm! They play decent rock! Long live Tuks FM!!!
