I just attended the XP Forum that the JCSE holds every month. Topic this time around was XP Approach to Design by Morkel Theunissen, which I was very interested in as this is a problem I have experienced a couple of times... especially when trying to explain to management. A couple of interesting ideas arose out of the conversations that followed, and numerous debates on the topic. Some people believed that you shouldn't even decide on the architecture at all before starting to develop, e.g....
I just wanted to search for C# posts on MSDN's Newsgroups, so I went to http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/ and typed "c#" as my search phrase, and what did it return...? NOTHING!!! Your query for "c#" did not return results. The following may help you find the results you were looking for: * Check your spelling. * Enter a term or phrase that's less specific. * Try different phrasing. * Try fewer words. And as I wrote this post I went back just to confirm and searched again... this time accidentally...
I went to a Women in IT event again this morning. I love what they are doing, giving bursaries to girls who want to study in the IT field, having mentorship programs, helping out in the community. They have a new project where they need women in the community to go and help out at a hospice in Olievenhoutbosch for a day. Olievenhoutbosch is a very poor area with about a 50% unemployment rate. On top of that it is a great networking opportunity, meeting other women that work at IT companies. Please...

Last week Thursday I attended the launch of a new site especially for the 'female geeks' among us - Women in IT . It is an initiative by Microsoft and they are promoting the role of women in the SA IT sector. Firstly Astrid Warren, HR Director of Microsoft SA talked to us about how they created forums and support for the women in their company, e.g. Equal opportunities, making sure that men and women are paid the same, etc... Astrid also showed some stats that were no surprise, but she asked the...
I attended a SQL Server 2005 event on Tuesday at Microsoft and after the event the speaker, Gary Hope of iSolve announced that they are going to relaunch the Sql Server usergroup in September. I know some of you are still following the activities on the SlugZA distribution list, which I think has been going for 6 years now, but apparently it got a bit quiet lately... I assume if she’s blogging about it, I can as well :) Those of you who follow her blog would know, for those who don’t - famous blogger Julia Lerman is coming to South Africa for Tech Ed . She's going to talk about: - What's New in Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 3.0 - Introducing Indigo Integrated Innovation: - Using ADO.NET 2.0 with SQL Server 2005 And along with her we are going to see one of her friends and a top speaker at last year's Tech Ed: Kate Gregory . Her talks: - Microsoft...
Today I read an article in The Star about poverty and blah de blah de blah - same story we've heard over and over again the last couple of weeks. I am tired of hearing the same story, partly because you don't have to bombard me with all those facts as I already know it is bad out there and really want to help. But I have always had an excuse to actually go out there and help: time, money, this, that... The difference about this article was that it showed me how easy and cheap it is to help, there...

Browsing through my regular feeds I came across this post of Julia Lerman where she expressed interest into going to different Tech Ed's around the world. Me and a couple of other South Africans I know of would LOVE to have her here for Tech Ed Africa !!! Julia has her very popular blog "Don't be Iffy" over at http://www.thedatafarm.com/blog/ , check it out if you haven't yet.. She was appointed as a .NET Rock Star and has been interviewed twice on .NET Rocks . Julia is the founder and leader of...
I just want to congratulate Hilton on having an article published in the March edition of asp.net PRO magazine. Wow! The article is about Typed Datasets: “As Hilton Giesenow explains, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of typed DataSets will help you avoid some of the common pitfalls encountered in their use.” It is a superb article (unfortunately only for paid subscribers) and a lot of effort and hours must have been put into it... Excellent work, Hilton!! Ps. I see Hilton sort of...

Due to popular demand I decided to upload the photo. Ernst took this during the closing keynote. This is me pulling a funny face - HP had a competition where the person who pulled the funniest face could win a camera and photo printer. Real cool prize, but unfortunately I didn't win and now I just have a huge print out of this ugly face... Don't know where to put it yet - Armand says it scares him ;) Here... Day 3 One of the sessions I attended was 'What's New in ADO.NET for Visual Studio 2005 (code named "Whidbey")' and you can read about it here . Another one was 'Visual C# Best Practices: What's Wrong with this Code?' which was quite cool, but the presenter wanted very specific answers and it was difficult to know what it exactly was... Overall learned a lot. That evening it was the Closing Party and they had a show on (unfortunately don't know what it was called), but they sang some older rock songs...
Day 2 Started attending sessions, of which I enjoyed the Chalk & Talks of Ernst and Simon the most. Very interesting to hear what other people are doing with the technologies. Earlier the mornig I went to attend a Yukon session and got there a bit late. The place was packed, people were standing in the doors to hear what was to be said. But at that stage I didn't feel ready to stand there for the whole session and unfortunately missed it. Luckily there was another similar session that I was able...
