I thought AJAX was pretty ok, until I saw TiddlyWiki. Now I think that it is amazing.
TiddlyWiki rocks! I've been using as an adhoc notepad on my desktop the last couple of days and it's really great. One point, it's a single html file with a whole bunch of client-side script in. It's not really related to the AJAX group of technologies as there's no server interaction involved, everything happens by modifying that single html file. AFAIK you can also only save changes to your local disk, so you need a copy somewhere on disk for wiki updates to work. Still an awesome app.
