Spam wonderful spam

It seems as though many blogs were hit by spammers recently, and I'm just as irritated as anyone else here. Props to Arno for fighting back. In light of this, I found this article about this spammer who got arrested - props to the Aussie police for doing something about spam.

As for the spam problem on this blog site, I really think that we should have a feature that allows multiple blog comments/trackbacks to be deleted at once. At least this will save us some time in the cleanup operations. So how about it? I think that this has been requested before...

For sure!! I got spammed this morning. I feel so violated. Need to send a letter bomb to the idiots that spam. "You got mail" - bang - problem solved.

Hi Trevor,

The spam is a huge headache for me and I think everyone else at the moment. I'm onsite at a client at the moment so will only get time over the weekend to put some measures in place to try and curb the flow of comment spam.

On the deletion of multiple comments at once, it's also something I'll add if I get time. Unfortunately I'm literally swamped with other work at the moment so I'm a bit restricted for time making additions to the site. If you have time available I can give you a subversion account and I would really appreciate assistance in making that change.

I've been asking for this multiple delete function for a while now. Unfortunately my ASP.Net is'nt very good (I hate web apps and try to avoid them) but if there is a way I can help by creating a page to do this I would happily do that. Tell me what is in volved and how it can be done.

Thanks Rudolf, unfotunately good ASP.NET knowledge is a requirement. Thanks for the offer.

I'm going to do a WHOIS lookup on those spam URL's and send them anthrax.

I tried to turn of the comments option in my blog preferences, but everytime I save it, it reverts back to allowing comments.

Any ideas?

One thing that I've noticed about a lot of the spam on this site is that the sender and the title of the spam message/trackback are the same. Is there a way for us to put a rule that recognises this pattern in as a quick fix in the interim?

On the comment spam you can report the sender url as spam under the admin section.
I can't remember however if using the comment api as they are currently doing would bypass that check, I'll check that first thing tomorrow morning.

The trackback spam filter from Brian does regex matching on the content to determine whether it's spam, I'll modify the comment spam filter to work in the same way.
At the moment all the regex's doing the trackback matching is stored in the config file, if you come across new spam patterns please forward to me and I'll add it.
Brian is changing the way the trackback filter works so it's configurable from the individual blog admin sections.

Unfortunately as I said before I'm screwed today as I'm behind a proxy and can't change anything on the server. All I can do is to hope they die horrible deaths today but other than that the earliest I can do anything is tomorrow morning :S:S

I'm very sorry about this but please be patient, we will sort it out tomorrow morning. I'll delete all the spam from the database as well as manually deleting it is a nightmare.

A secondary solution we'll also add tomorrow is a trigger on the database to delete spam as it's added should something make it past the filters.

IANAL, but maybe this section of the ECT Act of 2002 applies to the SPAM problem that we currently encounter:

45.
(1) Any person who sends unsolicited commercial communications to consumers, must provide the consumer—
(a) with the option to cancel his or her subscription to the mailing list of that person; and
(b) with the identifying particulars of the source from which that person obtained the consumer'spersonal information, on request of the consumer.
(2) No agreement is concluded where a consumer has failed to respond to an unsolicited communication.
(3) Any person who fails to comply with or contravenes subsection (1) is guilty of an offence and liable, on conviction, to the penalties prescribed in section 89(1).
(4) Any person who sends unsolicited commercial communications to a person who has advised the sender that such communications are unwelcome, is guilty of an offence and liable, on conviction, to the penalties prescribed in section 89(1).
