Why are we not producing solutions locally anymore?

During strategy meetings at JCSE and saArchitect it was confirmed again and again that South-Africa has top IT people that need to stand second to noone.

Why is it then, that the industry and even large IT vendors take opportunities to the overseas IT market first, usually ending up spending huge budgets on international solutions. This outflow of funds is not only hurting the local economy, stalling the IT growth, but is probably a major factor for the brain drain we are battling with in South-Africa.

As a community (saArchitect and saDeveloper) I believe that we need to give this problem some serious thought and ensure that we can demonstrate what we know that IT South-Africa is capable of delivering with the support of industry. We should be exporting our solutions, not our “brains on a stick”.

VS.NET BETA2 Media has shipped and is "working"

Those of us who have spend days downloading and days trying to resolve the error 2337 error will be pleased to note that the “media” we received yesterday installs flawlessly ... q;-) Cowabunga, we now have BETA smiles again and unit testing is back in our midst.

Special thanks to the Microsoft Ascend team, to Lillian at MSSA and my colleagues who assisted in the BETA-2 download and problem resolutions.

VS.NET BETA-2

For all those that have gone through the pain of downloading BETA-2 for VS.NET ... which takes days ... please be aware that your installation is likely to fails 3/4 through when the installation is installing Unit Testing features. The error we have reproduced on all machines we have tried to install BETA-2 on and an error which is well documented on discussion forums worldwide and on Microsoft MSDN is error 2337.

To avoid this error, deselect the last option under testing components, unit testing and the installation will complete successfully. Obviously without unit testing features ... q;-(

I have received a notice from Microsoft that the BETA-2 media has been dispatched, so the Ascend and BETA members should receive a working media in due course.
