Sending and receiving SMS's ... any suggestions? - Willy-Peter Schaub's Cave of Chamomile Simplicity

Sending and receiving SMS's ... any suggestions?

We need to develop a “simple” demo, which includes the need to send and receive SMS messages in a Windows application. Has anyone got any recommendations in terms of cellular devices and/or software?

It all depends on the number you need to send and receive.

If your volumes are large and redundancy is important you should consider supporting the SMPP protocol as this is the best for high-throughput.

If redundancy and throughput is not an issue, a Wavecom GSM/GPRS modem connected to a serial port would work just fine. A little bit of coding is required to encode the PDUs but that is simple to pick up. Other modems in phones from companies like Siemens, Nokia and Sony Ericsson can also be used, but I tend to prefer a real GSM modem.

The quickest way however might be to contact a local service company like Clickatell (http://www.clickatell.com/) that provides access via various mechanisms.

If you need help, get in contact with me.

Probably the best local resource is http://www.vodazone.co.za/ (I think they also use clickatell) but they've got several api's you can use for your demo and it's real easy to setup.

i liked the clickatell one, especially because they offered a lot of ways to use their service and thorough documentation for each. for example: referencing a dll which would take care of the rest and even offers stuff like account quering. That makes it quite easy to extend the functionality to more than just sending and receiving a sms.

I used a Wavecom GSM desktop modem. I wrote my own communication library, the modem uses a simple GSM AT command set. If you need help, just gimme a shout through my blog.
