Why do people show no respect for RSVPs? - Willy-Peter Schaub's Cave of Chamomile Simplicity

Why do people show no respect for RSVPs?

Yesterday we hosted the third monthly saArchitect community event focused on “Microsoft Enterprise Libraries, a worthwhile open source initiative?”, for which both Peter and Ernst spend a lot of time and effort preparing. Based on the 51 RSVPs received Tina from Microsoft made arrangements for facilities and refreshments. So where does this thread lead ...?

We had 18 people showing up ... 33 missing in action, with only 1 appology.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the session I wondered whether there is something rotten in the state of  the “saArchitect” community. Surely one either shows up or sends an appology once confirming (RSVP) attendance for a session?

Anyway, thanks Tina for the facilities and thanks Peter and ERnst for an excellent session. The 33 missing in action have no idea what they missed.

Luckily I'm not one of those that RSVP'd as I knew I couldn't make a 15h00 session due to work pressures. I'm quite upset though that I couldn't make time for it.

Surely the session should be rather 18h30 or 19h00 as I believe more people will be able to pencil it into often very busy schedules.

I think (I could be wrong (it happens (A Lot))), but no-shows could be a result of having the meeting during working hours. People are all keen to come until the day of the meeting and they are under pressure at work and suddenly change their minds...

Unless there is a life and death situation, which is not liekly with the more than 50% no shows, a simple call and appology would surely be in order? The community is sponsored and run by the community, we continue to spend lots of time preparing these sessions and hosts spend lots of money sponsoring the event ... if the attendance is not resolved, both the hosts and the presenters will loose interest which would be a loss to the community.
