Do you want to know more about TFS/VSTS, WF and WCF?

We are planning to host our developer readiness program DRP'2006 and DRP'2007 on weekends for the South-African community, covering the complete Team Foundation Server ecosystem, an overview and drill-down on Windows Workflow and an overview and drill-down on Windows Communication Foundation. See http://dotnet.org.za/willy/archive/2006/09/16/_1C20_Thor_1D20_-and-_1C20_Odin_1D20_-Community-Initiatives.aspx for details and let us or your community lead know if you are interested ... we can only motivate our sponsors of there is an interest and demand!

You can also visit us on http://www.drp.co.za for more detailed information of the DRP, for value-add products such as snippets and quick reference posters and news on the WF/WCF DRPs ... which we will publish as soon as they materialise.

TFS Scrum methodology migration from 1.0 to 1.1 notes

When upgrading from Scrum 1.0 to 1.1 methodology template and running the migration tool, please note that the "environment" and "team" settings are not migrated when migrating from project A to project B and then deleting Team Project A. We fell into this hole and ended up reconfiguring List Manager and updating the backlog items.

See http://scrumforteamsystem.com/processguidance/ for the template latest download and migration documentation.

Adding binaries to Source Safe (VSS) is looking for pain, what about TFVC?

Anyone who had the privilege of recovering and/or running daily consistency checks on Source Safe depositories containing huge binary and documentation files knows that the storage of binary and large documentation files is not recommended for Visual Source Safe. In all fairness, the solution is a “source” depository … but then where should one keep the documentation and binaries matching the source trees?

Does the same concern apply to Team Foundation Version Control? Can we actually store binaries and documentation in TFVC? Do we the “store only last version” option that saved us in VSS days, in TFVC? Where should we store documentation, if not in TFVC?

… these are common questions we are asked on a regular basis.

Let us respond to them to the best of our ability. TFS creates a Sharepoint Portal for each Team Project, which is an ideal location to store documentation and ‘possibly’ even the binaries. However, for those that like to keep everything together in one happy solution, storing source, documentation and binaries in TFVC is a feasible option.

TFVC stores all files in a compressed format (which VSS did not) and the reverse delta algorithm used for binary files has dramatically improved since the VSS days. It is therefore feasible to add your binary and documentation files to the solution.

No, we do not have the “store only latest version” option in TFVC, but the product team has been notified and already the VSTS MVPs are discussing the feature and possible improvements over VSS … so watch this space.

Teachers … do they grow or destroy our kids?

I dislike misusing my BLOG for personal gripes, however, the cyclists abusing the road and giving us all a bad name deserved a mention last year and this year I would like to mention the “teachers”.

We have three boys, filled with enthusiasm and excitement … until they go to school.

What is the cause … I have been asking myself for some time, especially as I went to the same school many, many moons ago and have been involved in adult learning/mentoring for a long time. Looking at my school report I notice a mirror image of one of my boys … yes I was also told that I am not going to make it in life, that I was a disaster as I failed to remember the to-me-irrelevant historical dates and the spelling words we had to learn a-la-parrot-style every week.

So what is my issue with teachers? The "Pygmalion Effect" is possibly an explanation to the behaviour shown by many kids, as they are strongly driven by the attitude of their teachers, i.e. if labelled as incompetent, they will never be able to show their true potential.

Personally I have had many debates with experts in the education field, arguing that pedagogic principles are outdated and that teachers should consider adult learning principles, taking the different learner styles in cognisance, with our children as well. The "Hawthorne Effect", for example, has proven extremely productive with my boys at home, together with motivation and constant confirmation of his potential.

It is time that teachers stop trying to fit each kid into a common mould, that they stop telling the kids how miserable they are, that they stop looking for problems with the kids … the latter keeps all the psychologists happy, however, it seriously influences the kids, their motivation and most importantly their self esteem.

Instead teachers should see each kid as an individual with its own strengths, interests and potential, they should motivate and encourage the kids and they should perhaps start looking for problems with themselves. Perhaps it is the way the kids are taught, perhaps it is the content taught to the kids and/or perhaps it is the enthusiasm, or lack thereof, of teachers that make many turn to a dream world, switching off to the outside world and subsequently failing tests and being labelled as class jokers and failures.

I hope that some of the teachers in the school I thankfully survived will take note of this post and give the topic some thought, because many kids are being destroyed, rather than shaped for their future. Yes, I was labelled as a failure and my primary school report would bring fear to any humanoid in this galaxy, however, I encountered competent, caring and motivated teachers in high school and competent and caring mentors after leaving the school, which have made me grow to what I am today.

I am not perfect and my spelling is still atrocious, however, I have discovered that spell checkers can assist me and allow me to focus on far more important issues. “I have a dream” … that teachers will one day analyse themselves first, that they will see the potential in every kid and allow each kid to grow into a unique star, not a member of a robot society.

Please note that this post is not directed at all the teachers, only the "few" that are making a negative difference to the future of our nation. There are many, many passionate, motviated and competent teachers/mentors (my wife is one of them) who are making a positive difference and will hopefully influence and swing the other minority.

“Thor” and “Odin” Community Initiatives

For those unable to commit 4-days of “production time” to attend one of our public domain VSTS and/or WCF/WF boot camps we submitted a proposal to our community sponsors to run the VSTS (Odin) and WCF/WF (Thor) boot camps over 2 Saturdays in October and 2 Saturdays in November respectively … or at a later date as we are rapidly approaching October.

The intention is to cover all the introduction content and deliver demonstrations, supplying comprehensive handouts which will allow attendees to re-do the demonstrations and complete the relevant boot camps in their own time.

Again this initiative is based on demand, so if you are interested then evangelize the initiatives and ensure that we receive enough feedback and demand to allow us to motivate the events to the sponsors who would be minimizing cost to attendees by sponsoring the IP, the facility and event management.

The sessions will be delivered by technology specialists, who are community members of saArchitect (http://www.saarchitect.net) and would host the event on behalf of the community.

Please let us know if you are interested and spread the word.

TFS “Power Tools”

Recently Microsoft released the TFPT - Team Foundation Power Toys (see http://blogs.msdn.com/rrawat/archive/2006/09/14/753245.aspxs for details) which are excellent utilities released in between the scheduled service pack and revision releases.

What is important is to realize that there are also a mountain range of excellent 3rd party tools for TFS/VSTS. If you have specialized requirements, or common problems such as migrating from VSS/CVS/VCS/and other source depositories to TFVC, or need to coexist, then make sure to visit http://accentient.com/widgets.aspx which delivers a list of many of the 3rd party solutions and http://www.componentsoftware.com, which has good tools focused on source depo coexistence and migration, and much, much more.

Forthcoming Developer Readiness Program Initiatives

We are in the process of planning to host a 4-day VSTS-drill down and 4-day WCF/WF .NET3 drill down boot camp in the November timeframe, run in parallel. The VSTS track is based on our standard VSTS bootcamp (see http://www.drp.co.za for details), while the WF and WCF is based on our new DRP’2007 bootcamp program.

We are hoping that we can also discuss some of the forthcoming features in .NET 3.1 and beyond during those sessions, however, the degree of discussion will depend on how much Microsoft will allow us to talk about the features we are encountering as part of our early adoption and SDR processes.

If you are interested in an any of these sessions please let us know and let your colleagues let us know as well, because the more demand we have the more motivation we have for Microsoft to agressively ramp-up the evangelism of these technologies.

Deedle-Dee and Deedle-Dum on their way back from the overload asylum

Back from the ‘past’ … we are resurfacing

Apologies for the low profile, lack of information sharing and absence from the community. We, MTU, are resurfacing from exciting projects, working together with Margie’s dynamic, innovative and quick-paced powerhouse team and wrapping up preparations for the imminent Unisa examinations. The flow of information should therefore resume and we are now starting to focus on a number of DRP (developer readiness program) and community initiatives on which I will blog separately.

The illustrations show deedle-dee and deedle-dum, or rather Jean-Pierre and I … the strain of the past few weeks is more evident in our dress code

archWorkshop September Session

We have gathered for the first archWorkshop, with the objective of listening to an Enterprise Solutions Architect and being in a position to define the role in the South-African context. After 2.5 hours of interesting discussions we realized that we have a number of challenges and ended with more questions than answers. We will be resuming the discussion in October. Please note that the notes will only be distributed at the workshops, so your attendance is required. We will publish the final whitepaper on saArchitect, once the archWorkshop team has released the document.

Thanks to everyone who attended, your passionate discussions and committing your personal time to this initiative.
