Why are my comments not showing on this blog?

I recently got a query from a reader as to why his comment was never published on my blog. Well, due to a hectic spam attack on our community server and associated blogs, I have turned comments to manual approval long time ago. There are obviously certain disadvantages, because I have to trawl through a lot of spam to find your comments, You have to wait for a long time for your comment to show and I often have to make a decision whether to post or delete a post. I created and am contributing to...

Sorry for blogging and mental absence ...

Last week I must have eaten something at the conference that was not altogether kosher, because Wednesday and Thursday I thought I was busy dying and Friday and Saturday I was scared that I would not be able to die ... the worst I have ever felt in my lifetime. It is scary that one can enjoy a buffet the one day, then fade away over the next few days. Here are some of the characters that may have played a part last week: Make's one wonder whether science fiction is really so far fetched?!? Share...

Why is the interoperability drive so important to us?

This must be the gazillionth time I am writing this blog post, whereby I deleted the previous attempts as I wanted to avoid the possible whiplash I will receive from some of my colleagues and the more 'radical' technologists. Henk, who is one of my colleagues involved in our interoperability drive within our company, in our technology communities and more recently at universities, emailed me two links, which everyone must have a look at: Microsoft Becomes Official Apache Sponsor Sam Ramji...

Metro Police ... Lead by example anomaly

I normally do not get upset with road hogs, however, when a metro police bakkie overtook me on the left, cutting into my lane at the road construction works, then proceeded to speed through the traffic I started wondering whether the law enforcement officers should not be leading by example. The vehicle, RMG337GP, was on the Jan Smuts road at 11:30 today. Following it shortly, I thought that the fact that (1) it was speeding at 80km/h in a 60km/h zone and accelerating, and the fact that it (2) had...

Limping to work today ... where are the relaxing weekends?

In case you're wondering ... the last weekend was tough and definitely had little to do with relaxation. Apart from reworking all Guidance II diagrams, I enjoyed the six a side soccer championship  my youngest competed in on Saturday, walked 2.5km to the Walk the Talk event, walked 15km with my wife, walked 2.5km back to home (all uphill to Melville) and finally watched my oldest started his student pilot license training ... this time in a slightly smaller plane than the Albatros and definitely...

FC Crushers ... my youngest son enjoys his soccer

I relaxed this weekend, enjoying good South-African wine with my dear friend Hans-Joachim who is visiting us from Germany, and watching my youngest son play soccer. His team, FC Crushers, had a 6-a-side competition today. Although they did not do as well as they hoped for, they enjoyed themselves, had lots of fun and kept us thoroughly entertained: ... now its dinner time and then I will be working on the TFS Branching Guidance II diagrams, introducing a new and simplified look&feel. I will share...

Vista - Run As Other User

We are currently battling with our Vista based laptops, as our remote assistance and remote access has been disabled after the last batch of hot fixes, and literally grayed out ... we cannot enable. We are raising a support incident as we cannot find a resolution and as the issue is quite frustrating. We will report back on this gremlin. Another frustrating Vista issue is the lack of the "Run As Other User" feature. Once again SysInternals comes to the rescue with the ShellRunas utility...

What you see in a picture ...

While waiting for our flight to Port Elisabeth at the Cape Town International airport, we spotted this Turkish aircraft getting ready for departure ... spot the innovative and power conscious solar panel on top of the plane ... ... obviously it is the solar panel of the airport lights, but still looks like an innovative idea at a quick glance. My son joins the "humble" aeronauts in a Aero L29 Delfin (Sasol Tiger)

It has not been my son's first flight, but definitely the most exciting and exhilarating today. He took off in the Aero L29 Delfin, which is a Czechoslovak two-seat jet trainer, at 9:30AM today. Ralf Dominick, the leader of the Sasol Tigers and in my opinion one of the best pilots, took him through the aerobatic paces ... while the rest of us waited at the Rand Airport wondering how he would perform in his "cool" flight and G-suit and taking control of the amazing aircraft. He last...

Neptune AWOL ... watching my son swim

Sorry for the blogging silence ... I have not lost my passion for technology, but am currently "relaxing" in Sasolburg, in a real old-style hotel, and hopefully motivating my son to do well over the next two days at the Sasolburg winter championships. Pictures of the event will be shared when I get back to Johannesburg ... in the interim I will include a map to the event. The hotel is as indicated and the pool is circled in red. It is cold ... but relaxing q;-) Share this post: email it...

Neptune finally goes Vista

Well, I received my new laptop ... after loading Windows Server 2008 I was missing the drivers and the features I expected on a personal workstation. Microsoft, please can we have a Workstation 2008 OS ... basically Windows Server 2008 with the Vista bells and whistles. Although I was terrified initially, I was pleasantly surprised with the speed of the installation, the performance of the laptop at this stage and the plug-play of all the devices I had lined up. Even my HTC phone and my trusted Zune...

Groundcover Leather Company ... highly recommended!

In a country where consumer service has become an endangered species, the company "Groundcover" can and must be highly recommended! A few weeks ago my colleague drove all the way to Howick to buy me a pair of Trekker 4x4 boots, with a genuine 4x4 tyre sole ... that a serious sole, made from brand new 4x4 tyres. Unfortunately the seam of my right boot started to part. Normally we would throw the goods away, as the chance of getting them repaired is close to zero and not worth the effort...
